Set of Contemporary Turquoise European Sculptural Candlesticks by Margit Wittig
By Margit Wittig
Located in London, GB
Margit Wittig has used her sculptural skills to create beautifully-crafted, well-proportioned candlesticks, which are compositions of her unique signature pearl-shaped designs. Each candlestick begins as hand-sculpted spheres which are used to create moulds in three sizes. Margit refers to these finished spheres as pearls. These highly original, eye-catching candlesticks come in three different sizes depending on the number of pearls: three, five and seven. The candlesticks are cast in resin and Jesmonite mixed with pigment at the start of the process, to ensure colour consistency. Some of the candlesticks are subtly finished with hand painted gold patina to reflect the shimmer of the candle. Each one is made with a solid brass drip catcher and can be cast in a variety of colors. Working from her studio in London, as well as candlesticks, Margit creates artistic lighting...

Rococo Silver Candlesticks by Alexander Johnson
By Alexander Johnston
Located in New Orleans, LA
An outstanding pair of sterling silver candlesticks by English silversmith Alexander Johnston. Reflecting the mid-18th century Georgian taste for the Rococo style, these candlesticks feature deeply chased decoration, from shells and palms to acanthus and rosettes, as well as an engraved armorial on each pedestal. Their exuberant yet balanced design is characteristic of the sophisticated style brought to England by French Huguenot silversmiths in the 1700s. Alexander Johnston first entered his mark in 1747 and work such as his, as well as that of artists like the celebrated Paul de Lamerie, indicated the adoption of French forms in all of the decorative arts, from furniture to textiles, hailing the dramatic shift from the more restrained classical manner. Excellent condition. Hallmarked London, 1751 10 ¾” high Reference: English goldsmiths and their marks, 2nd ed., 1921, Sir Charles James Jackson.

Questions About Nan Nan Liu
  • 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 10, 2025
Nan Goldin is famous for her work as a photographer. She was particularly drawn to the avant-garde music scene in Manhattan in the late 1970s and early ’80s, and “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” series would include many photos taken in her newly adopted city. Goldin first exhibited the series at the Whitney Biennial in 1985 before publishing it as a book a year later. In its startling honesty, Goldin’s gripping portraits captured sexual relationships, drug use, intimate scenes in the homes of families, partying at bars, domestic violence and the AIDS-related horrors faced by those in the era’s LGBTQ+ community. Over the years, Goldin has collaborated with Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki and completed projects for Jimmy Choo and Bottega Veneta. While her work has broadened to include New York City skylines, portraiture and commercial fashion photography, her commitment to documentary-style honesty has never wavered. In 2006, as part of Goldin’s "Chasing a Ghost” exhibition in New York City, a presentation was projected on three screens involving videos, photography and a musical collage focused on her older sister, Barbara, who took her own life in 1965. Among Goldin’s many accolades are her admission to the French Legion of Honor in 2006, the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in 2007 and the Lucie Award in 2014.
