Nathan Dolinsky Prints and Multiples

Russian, 1890-1981

Nathan Dolinsky, a painter of landscapes, portraits and still-lifes, was born in Russia in 1890. He was the youngest artist, aged twenty-three years, to exhibit in the 1913 Armory Show. He was also one of the youngest students ever to study at the National Academy of Design, in New York City. At the Armory Show, Dolinsky exhibited in Gallery M with other American painters including Edward Hopper, John Sloan and Leon Kroll. His entry, The Sightless, in oil, was painted the year the exhibition took place. It is a moody work implying horrific acts and dark gathering of figures in tangled night-time woods where a solitary, illuminated woman might be accused of witchcraft. Dolinsky retained possession of the painting until at least 1963. In contrast to the grimness of The Sightless, Dream Garden, Artist's Garden in Hunter, New York is rich in color, happy in mood and expressive of nature's lush bounty of plant life. He also exhibited at the Salmagundi Club and Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Nathan Dolinsky died in 1980. In 1996, the Georgia Museum of Art put on a three-man exhibition of the paintings of Nathan Dolinsky, John E. Costigan, a painter of workers and John W. Taylor, a landscape painter.
