American/Canadian printmaker, painter, sculptor, author, and educator Norman Laliberte was born in Worcester, Massachussets, in 1925, to French Canadian parents. He was raised in Montreal, Canada, where he attended l'Ecole du Musee des beaux-arts. After graduation in 1948 he returned to the U.S. to continue his studies at the Institute of Design (BS, 1951) and the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago (MS in art education, 1956). Additional courses took place at Worcester Museum and the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, to which he was granted a painting scholarship. He then began an extensive exhibiting career in conjunction with his work as a teacher. He began teaching in 1959, first at Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri from 1959 to 1960. This was followed by positions at St. Mary's College at Notre Dame Univerity, Indiana (1960 - '65); Rhode Island School of Design (1965 - '66); Newton College, Massachusetts (1967); and RISD once again from 1976 - 1977. Additionally, he was a guest lecturer and workshop leader at a variety of schools in both the U.S. and Canada. He received an honorary doctorate from both Notre Dame and McGill University. During his time as a teacher he continued to show in group and solo exhibitions;nhis first solo show took place at the Waddington Galleries in Montreal in 1965. A major feature of Laliberte's early output was banners executed in fabric, inpired by a trip he took to the Italian city of Siena during their summer festivals. This would prove to be a key turn in his career, as he was commissioned to work a consultant at the 1964 New York World's Fair, creating a structure made of 88 banners to represent stained glass walls for the Vatican Pavilion; this job earned him international recognition as both an artist and a designer. His most recent commission was eighteen large panels for the International Terminal at the Logan Airport in Boston. Norman LaLiberté died at his home in Nahant, Massachusetts on September 10, 2021. "First Rain at San Miguel de Allende", mixed media, acrylic and collage on canvas, signed lower left, titled, signed and dated 1984 verso, depicting a verdant tropical landscape with a pool with koi fish, in a n abstracted view with in an oak bullnose frame with burlap mat and gold liner, frame size: 53" x 37", canvas size: 48" x 32". Leonard Brooks (Canadian-Mexican artist) was born in Enfield, London, England, in 1911. He emigrated to Toronto, Canada with his parents. after seeing a lecture on Canadian art by Arthur Lismer, in which the Group of Seven painter described his love for the natural beauty surrounding them he decided he was going to become a painter. He took evening art classes at the Toronto Central Technical School (c. 1928); at the Ontario College of Art for six months under Frank Johnston. He then travelled and painted in England, France, Spain and in the United States at Woodstock, New York. On his return to Canada he settled in Toronto and in 1935 married Reva Silverman. He taught drawing, painting and graphic arts at the Northern Vocational School and was active in art circles and participated in most of the major exhibitions in Canada, and the U.S. and in the Canadian Section at the 1936 World's Fair. He began painting activities on the Great Lakes around 1939, visiting various docks and many of the ships that arrived and departed from the Great Lake ports. During World War II he left his teaching post in 1943 to enlist in the Navy (RCNVR) as an Able Seaman (1943). He was promoted to Petty Officer, then to Sub-Lieutenant in August of 1944. In September was appointed Official War Artist. Overseas he went aboard warships to paint the activities of minesweepers, motor torpedo boats off the coast of Normandy, in the Channel, off the East Coast and on the aircraft carrier HMS Puncher in waters off Scotland. On his return to Canada he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Following his army discharge he went to Mexico on a D.V.A. grant to study and decided to take up residence there with his wife Reva. The couple were early members of what became a well known colony of artists in that town, other Canadian artists such as York Wilson, Fred Taylor, Michael Forster and Fred Powell followed him there. He studied under Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros, while his wife Reva pursued photography. Their impressions of Mexico appeared in Canadian Art (Spring, 1950). Critic Rose MacDonald in the Evening Telegram wrote, "Like Siqueiros he paints in the abstract only as an exercise with a view to clarification, believing that this is the purpose of abstract painting . . . ." Since that time his figurative work evolved from abstract, to non-objective, to free-form collage acrylics with rich texture. Some of his paintings have been transposed into large tapestry works by five Mexican weavers under his direction. Leonard and Reva held a joint exhibition of their works in a number of centres including Eaton's Fine Art Galleries, Tor. (1949). Leonard Brooks has worked in a variety of media over the years including oils, acrylics, water colours, casein, duco, polymer, wax, and graphic mediums. He has written a number of books on painting techniques including: Watercolor A Challenge (1957); Oil Painting Traditional and New (1959); Wash Drawing and Casein (1961); Painting and Understanding Abstract Art (1964); Painter's Workshop (1969); Oil Painting, Basic and New Techniques (1971). He has had a lifelong love of music, is an accomplished player of the violin and has given free lessons to local Mexican children. He eventually was encouraged to head the music department at the Bellas Artes in San Miguel and as a result of his activity in music, an annual festival of chamber music is held which attracts players and listeners from around the world. He has held many solo shows during his career and his paintings have been exhibited at the following: Eaton's Fine Art Galleries, Tor.; Roberts Gallery, Tor.; the Cowie Galleries, L.A., Calif.; Childs Gal., Boston, Mass.; Ohio Univ., Athens; Kenyon College; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, San Francisco; San Antonio Biennial Interamericana, Mexico and at the 2nd Annual exhibition at San Miguel (1960) where he won 1st Prize. He is represented in the following collections: LAG, Lond., Ont.; U. Guelph; AGO, Tor.; NGC, Ott.; Can. War Museum, Ott.; Dartmouth College, N.S.; Worcester Art Museum, Mass.; Mus. of Modern Art, Mexico City; Ohio U., Athens; Slosberg Collection, Boston and in many private collections in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Caviar20 is excited to be offering this striking collage by the inimitable Louise Nevelson, who is regarded as one of the most original, influential, and successful American sculptors of the 20th century. Nevelson's enduring appeal lies in her distinct visual language, which is apparent in all of her works, regardless of medium. While her iconic monochromatic wood assemblages are instantly recognizable, she continuously experimented with diverse materials, including resin, steel, and bronze, as well as numerous printmaking techniques. Collage was an important part of Nevelson's practice, defining her signature aesthetic. Much like her approach to printmaking, her collages possess a sculptural ethos that transcends the two-dimensional surface, imbuing the composition with a remarkable sense of volume, texture, and depth. One could argue that Nevelson's sculpture was informed by collage in that she took assorted existing forms combining them in order to create an entirely new and distinct arrangement. This untitled collage is an exceptional example of the artist's mastery of the medium. Featuring an assemblage of wood veneer, mirror, and metal, this work reflects Nevelson's meticulous sense of form and rhythm. Subtle details, such as the alternating direction of the wood veneer grain further heighten the visual complexity of the otherwise minimal composition. The inclusion of wood veneer marks a notable shift for Nevelson, who was previously loyal to a strict monochromatic palette of black or white. It wasn’t until the 1970s with her experimentation in collage that she expanded her palette. Nevelson also created jewellery and this collage acknowledges her activity in that realm. Created at the age of 83 during the final chapter of her career, this piece powerfully captures Nevelson's enduring spirit and dedication to artistic innovation. Quilt is 28 X 28 inches Float mounted behind acrylic in wood frames bearing Fraas / Slade studio labels verso Collaborating artists Gayle Fraas and Duncan Slade's work has always explored the relationship of ornamental surface and portrayal of landscape in quest of a sense beyond place. Recognized for developing techniques for screen printing and painting with dye on fabric, other mediums include paint and ink on paper, metal, and wood. Their work sits at the junction of fine and applied arts with an influence of naive and folk art. Their collaborative dialogue has been continuous since the mid 1970’s. Fraas-Slade’s work has been selected for some of the defining exhibitions that have influenced the field of Art Quilts: “The New American Quilt”; originating at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York City in 1976, (along with Helen Bitar, Katherine Westphal, Radka Donnell, Anne Raymo) “The Art Quilt” at the Los Angeles Municipal Museum in 1986 (including Nancy Crow, Jean Hewes, Terrie Mangat, Jan Myers-Newbury, Theresa May, Pamela Studstill and Pauline Burbidge) and “Six Continents of Quilts: the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Art and Design,” NYC, touring internationally from 2002-2005. (the show included Jenny Hearn, Anne Marie Kenny, Gayle Fraas and Duncan Slade, Susan Denton, Sanae Hattori, Joan Schultze, Jenny Hearn and Mary Baxter). Books where work is featured include : Paintings of Maine by Carl Little, American Quilts: the Democratic Art 1780-2007 by Robert Shaw, The Art Quilt by Robert Shaw, Quilts Today by Robert Shaw, The Art Quilt by Penny McMorris and Michael Kile and Art to Wear by Julie Schafler Dale. Fraas and Slade continue to teach and lecture on their work. Workshops have been taught at conferences, art centers and colleges including: Haystack Mt. School of Crafts, ME, Arrowmont School of Crafts, TN and the School of Visual Arts, NYC. In 1989 and 2003, the artist team received Maine Visual Artist Fellowships and in 1995 a National Endowment for the Arts/ New England Foundation Visual Artist Fellowship. Mateo Manaure (11926 – 2018) was a Venezuelan modern artist. In Venezuela he is considered a master of modernist abstractionism, and is known for his works in the University City of Caracas and for creating the largest glass murals in the world. Mateo Manaure was born on 18 October 1926 in Uracoa, in Monagas state. Between 1941 and 1946 he studied at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Artes Aplicadas under the instruction of Antonio Edmundo Monsanto. Here, he studied graphic arts in the workshop of Pedro Ángel González, to whom he was an assistant. He also began participating in the artist salon of the Museo Bellas Artes in Caracas. In 1947 he won the inaugural National Prize for Plastic Arts and traveled to Paris. He made a trip back to Caracas the next year to work with the Taller Libre de Arte, before returning to Paris in 1950 and being involved with the artistic movement of Los disidentes. (The Dissidents), a coalition of Venezuelan artists (active from 1945-50) that also included -Jesús Rafael Soto, Narciso Debourg, Alejandro Otero, Pascual Navarro, Rubén Núñez, Nena Palacios, J.M. Guillermos Péres, Alirio Oramas, Luis Guevara Moreno, Aime Battistini, Armando Barrios, Omar Carreño (refer to lot 222), and Carlos Gonzáles Bogen. Through their journal of the same name and their accompanying radical manifesto No (1950), Los Disidentes championed a progressive vision, that eschewed the conservative academicism embodied by the Escuela de Artes Plásticas and the Escuela Paisajista in Caracas, and in its place advocated for experimentation and geometric abstraction. Upon his return to Caracas in 1952, Manaure set out in earnest to put these ideas into practice and found an immediate affinity with the modernist project unfolding so indicative of that era's unprecedented growth and development. The latter was most evident in the architectural and public art works designed by the legendary modernist architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva, whose Cuidad Universitaria, the main campus of the Central University of Venezuela, is considered a landmark of city planning and architecture. Villanueva commissioned Manaure to execute several murals, painted wood reliefs, and stained glass windows for Ciudad Universitaria all reflective of the young artist's newly adapted aesthetic. By 1956, the year both of these works were painted, Manaure was a leading figure of the abstractionist movement, exhibiting abroad at the Venice Biennial and locally at the Museo de Bellas Artes. His geometric abstraction painting infuse his compositions with a kinetic power and lyrical sensibility. Manaure's desire to evoke a sense of the local or regional amid the universal. He returned to Caracas in 1952 to found the Galería Cuatro Muros with Carlos González Bogan, and gave the first exhibition of abstract art in Venezuela. He also began collaborating with architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva, first on the University City of Caracas, to which he contributed 26 works of art and was "promoted" to art supervisor of the campus, and then to other public spaces like the redesign of the neighborhood of 23 de Enero. For the next several years, Manaure continued to develop within abstract art, which made up the Venezuelan artistic avant-garde of that time. He later returned to more traditional graphic art forms, especially lithograph prints, though still did some work in abstract expression. He is a Venezuelan Latin American art Master along with Gego, Lia Bermudez, Alejandro Colina, Narciso Debourg, Alejandro Otero, Gerd Leufert, Armando Reverón, Braulio Salazar, Jesús Rafael Soto and Martín Tovar y Tovar. His work was included in the MoMA show Sur moderno, Journeys of Abstraction— Patricia Phelps de Cisneros. It included artists: Israeli, Yaacov Agam, Brazilian, Lina Bo Bardi, Hércules...
