A German expressionist, Otto Hamel studied at the Royal Art School in Erfurt under Eduard von Hagen, Hans Semper, and continued his studies at the Academy of Arts, Berlin, where he was taught by Max Koch and Franz Skarbina. Followed by study trips to Italy, Holland, Spain, England and France, he was also involved with the Impressionist movement. Hamel returned to Germany and served as a professor at the Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
