Paddy Bedford, known commonly by his nicknames, Goowoomji and also his Gija name, Nyunkyny, was born at Bedford Down Station in East Kimberley. Bedford grew up in Bedford Downs, where he learned to work as a cattleman for the usual rations and tobacco. He was famous as a good-looking dancer and for being able to dodge spears in fights. In 2000, together with fellow artist, the late Timmy Timms, Bedford revealed the existence of a Joonba, a song and dance cycle telling the story of the Bedford Downs killings that had not previously been shown to outsiders. Bedford was a senior lawman and was involved in painting as part of the ceremony his whole life. He began painting on canvas for exhibition after Freddie Timms established the Hirwaun Aboriginal Art group at Rungun in 1997.
