My present work is a considerable departure in regard to content, execution and appearance - from those dark, abstracted cityscapes, my current drawings are light filled, clearly rendered landscapes. The burning process I use to make my drawings evolved differently for each series. Experimentation (in both bodies of work) is always important to me and always informs the resulting image. A very attractive painting by the celebrated Pennsylvania artist Frank F. English, the location is in Point Pleasant, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The painting depicts a scene of blue skies with two farmers tossing hay with pitchforks & two horses harnessed to a hay wagon, with barns to the background. The painting signed lower right " Frank F. English", condition is excellent this very charming painting is ready to hang on your wall. Biography Frank F. English was born in Louisville Kentucky in 1854. In the early 1880s, he studied for five years in the evening classes of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His instructors included Thomas Eakins, James P. Kelly and Thomas Anshutz. However, English's reputation primarily rests with his outstanding facility as a watercolorist; most of his known paintings are executed in this medium. English's propensity for its use coincides, appropriately enough, with the watercolor's growing popularity among other American painters. The American Water Color Society brought the medium special prominence by the late 1860s, and acceptance on the level of oil painting in 1876. That same year, the society was invited to display its works at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Its members exhibited 116 watercolors, and their public exposure was enormous. It is safe to assume that during the 159-day Centennial, Frank English was among the nearly 10 million exposition attendees, surpassing attendance records at all preceding world's fairs. This mural study is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Industry and Commerce, 1936, tempera on panel, 16 ½ x 39 ½ inches, signed verso “John Ballator, Portland Ore.” provenance includes: J.C. Penney Company, represented by Russell Tether Fine Arts Assoc.; presented in a newer wood frame About the Painting Industry and Commerce is a prime example of WPA Era muralism. Like a Mediaeval alter, this mural study is filled with icons, but the images of saints and martyrs are replaced with symbols of America's gospel of prosperity through capitalism. Industry and Commerce has a strong narrative quality with vignettes filling the entire surface. Extraction, logistics, design, power generation, and manufacturing for printing, chemicals, automobiles and metal products are all represented. To eliminate any doubt about the mural's themes, Ballator letters a description into the bottom of the study. Ballator also presents an idealized version of industrial cooperation, as his workers, lab-coated technicians and tie-wearing managers work harmoniously toward a common goal in the tidy and neatly designed environments. Although far from the reality of most industrial spaces, Ballator's study reflects the idealized and morale boosting tone that many mural projects adopted during the Great Depression. About the Artist John R Ballator achieved success as a muralist, lithographer, and teacher during the Great Depression. Born in Oregon, he studied at the Portland Museum Art School, the University of Oregon and at Yale University where he received a Bachelor of Fine Art. In 1936, Ballator was commissioned to paint a mural panel for the new Department of Justice Building in Washington DC, an important project that spanned five years with several dozen artists contributing a total of sixty-eight designs. Ballator completed murals for the St. Johns Post Office and Franklin High School, both in Portland, Oregon. He also contributed to the 1938 murals at Nathan Hale School in New Haven, Connecticut. There is no sepia tone, no pigment, no watercolor. The artist paints iconic views of New York City and other famous American cities with a wet brush on paper that he then burns with a blow torch to add contrast and hue. Bright headlights on yellow taxis illuminate the streets with such vibrancy that the work almost appears to be backlit. Throughout Chojnowski's career a distinguishing characteristic has been the use of nontraditional media and tools in his art making. His current work, images burned into paper and wood evolved as a result of his conscious effort to embrace art historical traditions while rejecting the traditional processes. Chojnowski began burning and scorching wood and paper to create his images in the early 1990’s. Since then, his fire drawings have been shown in group and solo exhibitions in art centers, museums and galleries nationally. His work was part of the set decoration on the Scott Hicks film No Reservations, starring Catherine Zeta-Jone and Aaron Eckhart and the Nancy Meyers film It's Complicated starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. A documentary titled AGLOW about his life has been shown at film festivals around North America recently. In 2013 Chojnowski's work was part of exhibitions titled illuminators at OK Harris Works of Art and SUB urban at Smart Clothes Gallery both located in New York. He was selected to be the first Artist in Residence at WATERFIRE Sharon, in western Pennsylvania where an exhibition of his fire drawings took place in October 2013. In 2014 his work was selected for the inaugural exhibition Figuring In at the Berkshire Artist Museum in North Adams, Massachusetts, home of MASS MoCA. In the autumn a fire drawing acquired by the University of Arizona Art Museum will be part of the exhibition A Continuing Legacy: Gallagher Purchases. During the summer and fall of 2015 his work was in the first exhibition at the Fresh Paint Gallery, part of the Berkshire Artist Museum in North Adams, Massachusetts and in WAVELENGTH: THE ART OF LIGHT at the University of Arizona Museum of Art in Tuscon. It was followed by a solo exhibition titled New and Selected Work at the C. William Gilchrist Museum of the Arts in Cumberland, Maryland that opened in October. In 2016 the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY mounted a solo show titled Paper, Plywood and Light. During the summer Bright Ideas Brewing in North Adams, MA hosted an exhibition his Infrastructure Series. Both exhibitions featured new drawings on plywood and illuminated drawings on paper. Artist statement: Walking after dark in the light filled streets of American cities like Boston, New York and Chicago has been my inspiration for an ongoing series of work I call Nocturnes. As a pedestrian one is aware of being surrounded by the rich array of sights and sounds. I have no interest in a studied representation of a street scene per say. My intent with this series has always been to capture a memory, a fleeting moment of what I saw from the corner of my eye as I made my way amidst the bustling city dwellers. Visually, my subject is light: taxi headlights reflecting off wet pavement, neon blaring and shop or apartment windows aglow. I love the energy of the city after dark and I hope to some extent to have captured it in works like On the Street and Out of the Darkness.
