"Pearl Royale Chess Set" 14K White Gold & Diamonds Ed. of 3 by Colin Burn Medium: 18K White Gold, Diamonds, Sapphires & South Sea Pearls Limited Edition - 3 Only Edition: Artist Proof 1/1 NOTE: preparation time may take up to 12 weeks. Pearl Royale Limited Edition Chess Set Crafted in solid 18K white gold and pave set with more than 510 carats of fine diamonds, the Pearl Royale stands as the world’s most opulent chess set ever created. This unique and lavish chess set radiates pure opulence through the finest quality materials, design, and workmanship. Handcrafted with a luxurious regal feel the Pearl Royale is symbolic in its design to the renowned 1849 Staunton standard chess set. Limited edition with only three sets being created, each being hallmarked, numbered, and authorized by the artist. Each solid 18K white gold chess piece is painstakingly paved’ set with the highest quality fine diamonds, AAA South Sea pearls, and Ceylon Blue sapphires, sitting atop a crystal glass board embellished with solid 18K white gold, pearl, and diamond set corners. The underside of each piece is intricately designed and channel set with the same quality fine diamonds and finished with smooth polished edges to glide effortlessly across the crystal glass board. Crafted as part of the artist's Limited-Edition Pearl Royale contemporary art collection, this truly unique chess set is sure to be realized as one of the world’s finest jewelry artworks ever created. Exquisite Staunton With championship origins, the Staunton design has been the world standard since 1849. Inspired by this legacy, the artist has paid homage to this royal standard, meticulously dressing and bringing each of his pieces to life with lavish regalia, fit for Kings and Queens. Artists Inspiration: As a young child I regularly played chess with my cousins so my parents gave me a beautiful Staunton chess set which I really loved. Growing up in the 60’s & 70’s my generation was exposed to Hollywood movies of epic battles, it was popular for us kids to have collections of toy soldiers which made chess a popular game as it embodied the same spirit and challenge. Thinking back on that fun times I was drawn to the idea of creating the world’s most beautiful chess set and in 2008 I finally put pen to paper to commence the design. At the time I was doing a lot of work with beautiful South Sea pearls, so they became the inspiration for my design to embody the heads of each piece and bring life to the characters. It was perfect as I could use both black and white pearls to define each side of the chess set. It was also important for my design to be Staunton-inspired as this has become the standard for chess sets since 1849 and the only chess set allowed in the world championships. I wanted to create the most beautiful chess set within this royal standard and it had to be dressed in all its regalia, with the world’s most beautiful diamonds and rich blue sapphires fit for kings and queens. My overall dream was to create the world’s finest chess set for the world’s greatest players to do battle! - Colin Burn The high-quality gems sourced and used in making the Limited-Edition Pearl Royale Chess Sets are GIA certified. Established in 1931, GIA is the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones, and pearls. A public benefit, non-profit institute, GIA is the leading source of knowledge, standards, and education in gems and jewelry. South Sea Pearls The Australian and Tahitian South Sea pearls are internationally regarded as the finest and most prestigious pearls in the world. Among the largest and rarest of cultured pearls, they feature a distinctive lustre and superior strength, endowed by their thicker layers of nacre. The Limited-Edition Pearl Royale Chess Set, features both silver white Australian and peacock black Tahitian South Sea pearls of AAA quality. Fine Diamonds The Limited-Edition Pearl Royale Chess Set features over 510 carats of the finest white diamonds ethically sourced and certified from the worlds leading diamond suppliers. Ceylon Sapphires Ceylon, which is now known as Sri Lanka, is one of the best-known sources for sapphire gems, particularly the Ceylon blue sapphire. Sri Lanka has produced sapphires for many years and a few of the most famous sapphires include the 423 carat Logan Blue Sapphire, the 563 carat Star of India...

"Jin’long (Golden Dragon)" 18K Gold Sculpture 7.5 x 1 in Ed. of 5 by Colin Burn Medium: 24K Yellow Gold, 18K White Gold & Diamonds Edition of 5 NOTE: preparation time may take up to 8 weeks. Electroformed 24k gold and diamond olisbos sculpture featuring a traditional Chinese dragon totem symbolizing power, strength and good luck, combined with an 18k white gold and pave diamond set lotus flower, reflecting purity of the mind and heart. The diamond lotus flower features a 3.8 carat flawless diamond solitaire at its peak. Sculpture comes with Limited Edition Artist Certificate of Authenticity and Jewelry Certificate of Materials. Artists Inspiration: “Influence was drawn from visiting Shanghai and encountering a city on the move like no other, expanding at lightning pace but reflecting back to the 1930’s when Shanghai was seen as the Paris of the East or better known as the whore of the Orient. There seemed to be a movement underway to ensure the city not forget its exciting past and efforts to recapture some of this vibrant history were at play. From my observation, modern China is experiencing a sexual revolution, where an oppressive past has given way to a new modern world of fashion, fun and luxurious opulence. I wanted to create a unique art piece that would reflect what I was seeing and feeling, it had to have deep Chinese tradition and power balanced out with this new outrageous opulence. From my perspective the new Shanghai is still the vibrant Paris of the East, or as she was better known, “the whore of the Orient”. Electroformed in pure 24k yellow gold, featuring a traditional Chinese dragon totem, symbolizing power, strength and good luck, combined with a solid 18k white gold pave’ set diamond lotus flower with 3.8 carat flawless white diamond solitaire at its peak. “It had to have deep Chinese tradition and power, balanced out with this new outrageous opulence” - Colin Burn ABOUT COLIN BURN: Australian artist Colin Burn is a bold provocateur in the world of conceptual art, using his work to disrupt societal norms and spark critical dialogue often around uncomfortable truths. His art pushes boundaries, urging viewers to rethink their assumptions on value, power, and meaning, especially in contexts often deemed taboo or overlooked. Known for his masterful fusion of symbolism and opulence, Burn transforms ordinary objects into potent allegories, frequently employing their high monetary value to amplify the emotional and intellectual resonance of his themes. He understands that society frequently ties value to price, and this awareness is central to his approach. With an attention-grabbing allure, Burn’s work invites viewers to look beyond the surface, encouraging them to explore the deeper, often concealed meanings behind what they see—reminding them that true value lies not only in the material cost, but in the idea or theme that it represents. A compelling example of this is his Pearl Royale chess set...

"Kings Remains" 24K Gold Sculpture 8 x 2 in Ed. of 10 by Colin Burn Medium: 24K Yellow Gold, 18K White Gold & Diamonds Edition of 10 NOTE: preparation time may take up to 8 weeks. Pure 24k yellow gold skull and spinal olisbos sculpture featuring an 18k solid white gold royal crown, set with 10 carats of flawless sparkling white diamonds. Sculpture comes with Limited Edition Artist Certificate of Authenticity and Jewelry Certificate of Materials. The crypt of the Kings Remains represents mortality and preserved sexual energy. The sexual spirit lives beyond the grave, etched into history and carried forward by those who have experienced this erotic power. The energy of an erotic past runs through us all, leaving a perpetual sexual imprint for others to follow and immortalize. “The encasing of mind, body and soul as entombed sexual energy, preserved among the ruins of life” - Colin Burn Inspiration & Context - Immortality was the underlying inspiration when creating this sculpture. A Vanitas reflecting on ancient royal entombment as man’s vain attempt to remain immortal by being buried with ones treasures. I wanted the sculpture to represent the encasing of mind, body and soul as entombed sexual energy, preserved among the ruins of life. The sculpture symbolizes how ones sexual energy is at the core of their being and how it can transcend beyond the grave for others pleasure and satisfaction. Materials - Electroformed from pure 24k gold featuring a solid 18k white gold royal crown, set with 10 carats of flawless diamonds. Paul Gauguin is known for his work as an artist. Although he started his career as part of the French Impressionists, his art later helped define the Symbolist movement, which focused on conveying meaning through the use of symbolic objects. Symbolism was highly influential and helped to inform other modernist movements, such as Fauvism and Expressionism. His distinctive style involved bold colors, flattened forms and semi-abstract subjects in paintings, sculptures and woodcuts. After he moved from France to Tahiti in 1891, his focus shifted to the island’s settings and people in more luminous work. Some of Gauguin's most famous works include Arearea, Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? and Tahitian Women on the Beach. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Paul Gauguin art.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 27, 2024
Paul Klee was famous for his artwork, which influenced a number of avant-garde styles. The Swiss-born German artist was a pioneer of Surrealist automatism, a way of drawing without focusing on conscious thought and instead letting lines occur automatically. He also made significant contributions to Primitivism, a style inspired by ancient techniques, and reductivism, which breaks familiar symbols down into their most basic parts. Here is an overview of the history of Paul Picot watches. In 1976, Italian entrepreneur Mario Boiocchi established the company in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He named his brand after Paul Picot, an 18th-century clockmaker. When the company launched, the watchmaking world was in the midst of the quartz crisis, with consumers turning away from traditional mechanical watches in favor of quartz models. While other watchmakers were experiencing financial problems, Paul Picot found success by offering a mix of quartz and mechanical watches crafted using traditional techniques and fine materials. During the 1980s, Paul Picot introduced its now iconic Seahawk diver's watch, a hybrid timepiece that combined automatic movement with mechanical components. As interest in pure mechanical watches grew during the 2000s, Paul Picot responded with new lines, including the Paul Picot Grand Complication and the Paul Picot Tonneau. The company continues to manufacture watches in La Chaux-de-Fonds today. On 1stDibs, explore a large collection of watches.

The style of art of Paul Gaugin is Postimpressionism. In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Postimpressionist artists employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.
