Pierre Eugene Montezin Art

French, 1874-1946
French artist Pierre Eugene Montézin, originally trained in decorative arts and mural painting under his father’s guidance. From the age of 18 he worked in a decorative atelier, painting floral panels and ornamental motifs. His exposure to the Impressionist movement inspired a pivot towards plein-air landscape paintings, setting him on the path to becoming a true Impressionist. Montézin passionately pursued Salon recognition for a decade; in 1903, he finally debuted at the Salon des Artistes Français after repeated rejections. Under the mentorship of Ernest Quost, he honed his drawing and painting technique, embracing a painterly style marked by spontaneous strokes and radiant light. Montézin enlisted during WWI and received the Médaille Militair for his service, spending significant time after the war in Dreuz and Moret-sur-Loing, painting landscapes in the tradition of Alfred Sisley with the influence of Claude Monet remaining present. Montézin remained a steadfast Impressionist, resisting contemporary movements like Cubism or Surrealism, and stayed devoted to natural, atmospheric subjects seen through ‘the heart’ as he reportedly told critic Louis Vauxcelles. He suddenly died in 1946 whilst painting Britany. Montézin’s work embodies a lifetime of devotion to light, landscape, and the authentic roots of Impressionism.

However, he soon left and briefly enrolled in the Columbus School of Art before going to the Art Academy of Cincinnati where he studied with Frank Duveneck. In 1900, Hopkins moved to New York City and worked as a medical textbook illustrator. Two years later he made the pilgrimage to the art center of the western world at the time, Paris, France. "Porto St. Martin - Paris" Colorful Impressionist Cityscape Scene Oil on Canvas

Located in New York, NY

A charming Parisian scene oil on canvas painting by the French artist, Johanne Schiefer. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Here you see figures walking the streets by the Porto st. Martin in Paris with an abundance of color and life. The magic is being felt with all the magnificent details, as Schiefer captures the architecture of Paris so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. The piece is signed by the artist lower right and titled lower left and it comes housed in a wonderful wood carved antique frame with original name plate affixed bottom center and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 20 x 24 inches Frame measures 28 x 32.5 inches Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in the Netherlands, and quickly gained notoriety for his landscapes, still life’s and portraits. Schiefer won the Prix de Rome at the age of 19 and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany, and then moved to Paris where he continued his studies in art at the Beaux Arts, and later at the Villa Medici in Rome. He traveled to paint across Europe, primarily France and Italy and also Latin America. When he married, he settled down in Nice France, and during the late thirties, he traveled and painted the coastline of the South of France, as well as Venice and the Adriatic. He remained in France until 1942, when he moved to New York with his family after the birth of their daughter, future actress Joanna Miles. Already an artist of stature when he arrived in New York, he settled with his family on Long Island, and for the next 30 years, Schiefer kept on painting and built a solid reputation as an important American artist. The Schiefers also had a son, Johannes Jr. After the war, Schiefer maintained a Paris studio and became a resident of Los Angeles for a time in the 1950s. For the next 30 years Schiefer kept on painting and during his career had numerous one man shows, having exhibitions at: Gallery Zak in Paris; Kunsthaus in Hamburg; Kunsthalle in Munich; Stiebel Galleries in Paris; O'Connor Gallery in Ontario; Museum of Modern Art, Wildenstein & Co, Carol Carstairs Gallery and Schoeneman Galleries in New York City; Esther Robles Gallery, County Museum and Vigoveno Galleries in Los Angeles; and the San Francisco Museum. Like Picasso, Schiefer never permitted himself to be “type-cast” in a single monotonous style. If there is anything that typifies his work, it is his versatility, his deft handling of subdued tones to create a unique brilliance of light and color that stamps every painting with his own individuality. In February 1964, Ethel Kennedy...

Many of her paintings depicted human-made structures and industrial landscapes in a style combining realism, precisionism and abstraction. Often the central subject such as in "Railroad Signal" was the only suggestion of humanity against a backdrop of stark Texas landscape. Of her painting these isolated subjects she said: "I enjoy taking some rather obscure or unimportant subject or theme and making something fine and important out of it . . . It always gives me great pleasure to discover something which has been passed over as being inadequate material". (Trenton 199) Spellman was born in Forney, Texas in 1905. At an early age she moved to Dallas, Texas and studied under Vivian Aunspaugh before attending the College of Industrial Arts (Texas Woman's University). She received a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University and a Masters Degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City in 1942. In addition, Spellman received a Carnegie Scholarship for study at Harvard University, followed by studies with Kenneth Hayes Miller, Vaclav Vytlacil, and Charles Wheeler...

Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire

A stunning oil on canvas circa 1920 by sought after French impressionist painter Pierre Eugene Montezin. The piece depicts a view of the River Eure which runs between Normandy and Centre-Val de Loire. Trees with pink blossom line the green grassed bank and reflect in the water below. The piece is painted in the artist's distinct style and is a beautiful example of his work. Signature: Signed lower right and titled "Bords de l'Eure" verso Dimensions: Framed: 27"x34" Unframed: 21"x28" Provenance: Private collection - Germany A certificate of authenticity is available upon request from Mr Cyril Klein-Montezin Pierre Montézin's father, a lace designer, found him a job with a design company, where he soon devoted himself to murals. Strongly influenced by the theories of Impressionism, he later embarked on a career as an artist in his own right. In about 1903 he came into contact with Quost who made him work on his drawing and gave him a taste for painting. He enlisted in 1914 for the duration of the war, and took up painting again on his return. He lived in Dreux and Moret for a year, and spent his holidays there from then on. Montézin was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1923 and in 1940 was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, taking the place left vacant by Edouard Vuillard's death. Montézin submitted a work to the Salon des Artistes Français for the first time in 1893, but it was rejected, as were all his subsequent attempts for ten years. It was not until 1903 that he was accepted, winning a third-class medal in 1907 and a second-class medal in 1910. He also exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français after World War I and was awarded the Rosa Bonheur prize in 1920. He was made a member of the society and honoured as hors concours, as well as being made a member of the committee and of the jury of the Salon des Artistes Français after having received their medal of honour. Montézin's painting was well-received, his technique - a distant descendant of Impressionism - captivating many by its virtuosity.
