Prunella Clough Art

British, 1919-2000
Prunella Clough is widely regarded as one of the most singular and significant British artists of the modern post-war period. Clough found her subjects by touring London’s industrial wastelands and bombsites - docks, power stations, factories and scrapyards - creating gritty, urban images. Her work - comprising paintings, collages, drawings, reliefs and graphics - increasingly centred on the components of the cityscape as her art shifted away from representation through various influences including cubism and European abstraction. Her abstract works often contrast colours and sometimes found objects and reveal her continual and personal preoccupation with formal qualities – composition, colour and texture - and her delight in the edginess and abstraction of everyday objects and experiences. Born in London in 1919, her father worked for the Board of Trade and her aunt was the architect designer Eileen Gray. She studied at Chelsea School of Art from 1938 where her tutors were influential artists of the day including Ceri Richards, Julian Trevelyan, Robert Medley and Henry Moore, and later she also studied part-time at Camberwell School of Art with Victor Pasmore. During the second world war she drew charts, maps and graphs for the Office of War Information and by 1945 had formed friendships with a group of artists including Michael Ayrton, Keith Vaughan, John Craxton and the poet Dylan Thomas that met in the Camden Hill Studio, which John Minton shared with Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun. She began exhibiting small still-lives and landscapes and had her first solo show in 1947 at Leger Galleries, London. Her rise to prominence followed her touring retrospective exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1960. Annely Juda Fine Art worked closely with her throughout her life holding numerous exhibitions of her work and continues to do so, working with her estate. A study of Clough’s works across the span of her career highlights the way in which she worked alongside her peers, drawing on art historical movements of her time, whilst always maintaining a distinctive way of seeing and painting that is deeply personal and acutely responsive to her surroundings. She was a highly influential artist and teacher to the post-war generation. In 1999, three months before her death at the age of 80, she won the prestigious Jerwood painting prize. In 2007 a major exhibition of her work was held at the Tate Gallery, London. Clough’s work is collected widely and represented in major public galleries and museums around the world including V & A London, Tate Gallery, London, British Museum, London, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia, Scottish National Gallery of Art, Edinburgh, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Wakefield City Art Gallery, Yorkshire.

Alexander Calder Lithograph c. 1971 from Derrière le miroir: Lithograph in colors; 15 x 11 inches. Very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. From: Derrière le miroir Published Paris c. 1971. Printed in France. Derrière le miroir: In October 1945 the French art dealer Aimé Maeght opens his art gallery at 13 Rue de Téhéran in Paris. His beginning coincides with the end of Second World War and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France. The publication was created in October 1946 (n°1) and published without interruption until 1982 (n°253). Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) who were famous at the time. The lithographic publication covered only the artists exhibited by Maeght gallery either through personal or group exhibitions. Among them were, Pierre Alechinsky, Francis Bacon, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Eduardo Chillida, Alberto Giacometti, Vassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Saul Steinberg and Antoni Tapies. Alexander Calder was an American artist best known for his invention of the kinetic sculptures known as mobiles. Calder also produced a variety of two-dimensional artworks including lithographs, paintings, and tapestries as seen in his Butterfly (1970). “My whole theory about art is the disparity that exists between form, masses, and movement,” the artist once said. Born on August 22, 1898 in Lawnton, PA, Calder turned to art in the 1920s, studying drawing and painting under George Luks and Boardman Robinson at the Art Students League in New York. Calder moved to Paris to continue his studies in 1926, where he was introduced to the European avant-garde through performances of his Cirque Calder (1926–1931). “I was very fond of the spatial relations,” he said of his interest in the circus. “The whole thing of the—the vast space—I’ve always loved it.” With these performances, along with his wire sculptures, Calder attracted the attention of such notable figures as Marcel Duchamp, Jean Arp, and Fernand Léger. Notably, it was his friend Duchamp that coined the term mobile—a pun in French meaning both “motion” and “motive”—during a visit to Calder’s Paris studio in 1931. His earliest mobiles moved by motors, but Calder soon abandoned these mechanics and designed pieces that moved by air currents or human interaction. Over the course of seven decades, along with his mobiles, he also produced paintings, monumental outdoor sculptures, works on paper, domestic objects, and jewelry. The artist lived in both Roxbury, CT, and Saché, France, before his death on November 11, 1976 in New York, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Tate Gallery in London. By Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione

Located in Milwaukee, WI

This is an excellent example of the kind of portraiture produced by Castiglione during the early part of the 17th century. In the image, we see the visage of a man with a mustache, wearing a fur-lined hat topped with a feathery decoration. The image is reminiscent of the work of Rembrandt van Rijn, himself known for his portraits in the form of etchings. 4 x 3.5 inches, image 15.25 x 13.25 inches, frame Inscribed "GC" in the plate, lower left This impression is from the edition ca. 1825 from the original plate of ca. 1635. Unlike many Italian artists, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione was profoundly influenced by foreigners. He first studied with local artists in his native Genoa, absorbing not only Tuscan Mannerism and Caravaggism but also the style of Peter Paul Rubens, who had worked in Genoa. From 1621 Castiglione also worked in Anthony van Dyck's Genoa studio. Early on, he was attracted to Flemish animal...
