Raka Studio Wall Decorations

Pakistani

At first glance, the beguiling furniture creations of Raka Studio look like optical illusions. A joint project of three brothers — Saleh, Waleed and Rayan Ahmed Salman — this exciting modern Pakistan-based company marches to the beat of its own drum. Its one-of-a-kind coffee tables, floor lamps and sofas serve as functional pieces of furniture and sculptural works of art.

Raka Studio was established in 2018 after the self-taught brothers produced their first pieces for the family home. The driving force behind all of their visually stunning designs is a love of nature and natural variance. Each piece is made entirely by hand, usually from ash wood imported from the United States, and can take weeks to complete.

In the studio, furniture is curved using ancient Japanese wood-bending techniques, giving the pieces an organic fluidity. The goal is to disrupt prevalent design trends while prioritizing quality craftsmanship. “This approach to our work helps us create distinct pieces that are also technically and aesthetically intriguing,” the brothers explained to StyleRow.

These unique designs have earned Raka Studio critical acclaim and partnerships in the United States and the United Kingdom. The brothers have exhibited at galleries and completed commissions for hotels.

Since its establishment, the studio has grown to include not just the brothers but a team of skilled craftsmen, with plans to introduce new materials and techniques over time. At Raka Studio, it’s all about pushing the limits of design.

The idea was born after deciding to reconnect with my family and my grandfather – a sculptor artist. Learning to sculpt and being a designer compelled me to combine these two mediums and use their best values. Experimenting with the functionality of sculpture and the meaning of furniture led me to create the collection. Studio AOAO is an interdisciplinary studio combining art and design. It was created by Alicja Strzyzynska and Onur Iseri in Amsterdam in 2020. “We specialise in making sculptural pieces by experimenting with the functionality of sculpture and the meaning of furniture. In our works, we focus on the emotional connection between the object and the user. All of our work seeks the experience of intimacy and the metaphysical bond between personal interaction and meaningful narrative. Through sculptural value and reflective design, we aim to create pieces that last for generations and help reduce environmental waste.” The inspiration to sculpt came from Alicja’s roots, her grandfather – an artist sculptor. Alicja completed Masters of Arts Degree in Product and Visual Communication Design at Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and finished her bachelor degree in Interior Architecture. Alicja previously worked in Tokyo and Amsterdam in architectural design studios. Onur completed his business studies in Japan and worked in digital design & marketing as well as teaching in Tokyo. The studio’s first collection debuted at Rossana Orlandi Gallery during Milan Design Week 2021. The studio currently collaborates with RO Gallery...

Hand-Carved Teak Wood Sculpture Panel Depicting Dayak Mythology

This unique teak carved panel depicts Dayak Tribal mythology. The Dayak people are some hundreds of various native groups found in the interior rainforests of Borneo. This carving depicts the tree of life, which the Dayak people believe exists on “Linden Tarung”, a mythical rock island where they believe humans first came to existence. “Linden Tarung” is the ancient and ancestral home of the Dayak peoples. It is this tree of life that reminds the Dayak people not to get too attached to worldly possessions. The tree of life also symbolizes heaven, earth and the underworld. The top of tree features hornbills that are the symbol of heaven. The middle represents the present earth and bottom of the tree the underworld. To achieve such detail & depth required immense patience, craftsmanship and many months by a skilled artisan to complete. The medium for this carving was an antique teak door...
