Ralph Peacock Portrait Paintings

British, 1868-1946

Ralph Peacock was a painter and illustrator born in Wood Green, London on August 14th, 1868. He was trained as a civil servant, but when he was 18 years old, he took art classes at the Lambeth School of Art, attending twice a week in the evenings. John Pettie saw one of his portraits and was so impressed he recommended that Peacock should take up painting professionally. Following his advice, Peacock attended the St John's Wood Art School, where he stayed for a year and then in 1887, he was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools. Peacock would have been familiar with all the famous contemporary artists of the period such as Sir Frank Dicksee, Lord Frederic Leighton, William Holman Hunt, Edward Burne-Jones and Herbert Draper. It was a common practice for artists to exchange models and Mary Lloyd, a professional artist's model, sat for Leighton and Alma Tadema and was introduced to Peacock by Herbert Draper. Peacock painted her in A Study of 1896. Peacock was also good friends with J.W. Godward. The influence of these artists on Peacock in his early years was very strong, and he won a Gold Medal and traveling scholarship from the Royal Academy for his historical painting Victory. He also won the Creswick prize. From 1890, Peacock also did book illustrations, signing his rather lively wash drawings with a flourishing signature or sometimes just 'R.P.' In 1892, he traveled around the Mediterranean and Switzerland. He exhibited his works, winning medals in Vienna in 1898 and Paris at the Exposition Universelle in 1900. By this time, Peacock's main interest was portraiture and he made his career as a very successful portraitist. Holman Hunt was among his sitters but he specialized in elegant society portraits of ladies and children. A double portrait called The Sisters is in the collection of the Tate and Peacock painted this in 1900. The elder of the two girls, Edith Brignall became his wife and they lived with their two sons in Wimbledon. He eventually moved to Camden and died there on January 17th, 1946. Peacock exhibited many society portraits at the Royal Academy and elsewhere and this charming picture is a fine example of the artist's genre. While illustrations by Peacock are widely distributed in the magazines of the day, including Punch, paintings by him are hard to find other than in public collections.

Portrait of Jeannie Netter, wearing a Burgundy dress
By Fedor Encke
Located in West Sussex, GB
Fedor Encke (1851-1926) – German Full length Portrait of Jeannie Netter, standing in an interior, wearing a Burgundy Velvet Dress holding a Pink Rose Oil on canvas :85 ¾ x 50 ¼ in. Frame :103 x 67 ¼ in. Signed & inscribed ‘New York’. Circa 1910 Jeannie Netter was an American born musician and song-writer but was mostly merited for her sculpture having been taught by the Russian artist Bernstamm. Fedor Encke was born in Berlin, Germany in 1851. Younger brother of Erdmann Encke who was a sculptor, Encke was the illegitimate grandson of King Frederick Wilhelm II of Prussia and Mistress Wilhelmine Encke, Countess of Lichtenau. Fedor studied under Karl Gussow in Berlin and then went on to study in Rome and Paris. Although he set up a studio in Berlin during the 1880’s, he seems to have travelled regularly between Paris and New York painting many American Society sitters, including President Theodore Roosevelt. Encke’s portrait of Roosevelt dressed in Rough Rider uniform, originally hung in the dining room of the White House and is now at the Presidents place of birth, Segamore Hill, New York. This portrait was also published as the frontispiece of ‘The Rough Riders’ by C. Scribners&Sons, 1899. Encke was in Paris in 1902 and painted the two banking giants, John H. Harjes and J.P. Morgan both having their portraits painted at the same time. To try and finish Morgan’s painting Encke hired a young photographer named Edward Steichen to take Morgan’s picture as a kind of aid memoir to minimize the sitting time. This photograph and the painting that resulted from it caused a considerable stir because of the uncompromising pose of Morgan. The portrait became synonymous with the new capitalism. Encke seems to have been very well connected socially and painted for many members of the European nobility as a result. Encke died in 1926. Works in Museums: Segamore Hill, New York (Portrait of Theodore Roosevelt) National Portrait Gallery America; Smithsonian; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art. ‘The Goddess Flora’ by Ralph Peacock (1868-1946). The painting – which depicts the Roman Goddess of Youth, and Springtime – is signed by the artist and features one of his favourite models, the English society beauty, Edith Brignall. It is one of three portraits of her painted by Peacock in the summer of 1897, the two others being in the collection of Tate Britain. The goddess Flora was a popular figure with the Pre-Raphaelite movement and also featured in paintings by both John William Waterhouse and Evelyn de Morgan. Academy Fine Paintings only offers artwork for sale in the finest condition it can be for its age, having been professionally cleaned, conserved, and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary. Ralph Peacock entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1887 where he won a gold medal for figure painting, and (perhaps more surprisingly) the Creswick Prize for landscape painting. Whilst still at the Academy, Peacock was widely considered to be the most gifted English painter of his generation and the heir to the mantel of Leighton, Dicksee, and William Holman Hunt whose portrait he would go on to paint in 1902. An immensely popular figural painter, Peacock was much in demand in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain and painted many superb society portraits of young English society beauties. Of all his many illustrious patrons and sitters probably the most famous was US President Herbert Hoover, the two becoming life-long friends. Peacock also achieved great success internationally, winning a gold medal in Vienna in 1898 and another in Paris at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. Between 1888 and 1934 Ralph Peacock exhibited 94 paintings at the Royal Academy and numerous others at the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Grosvenor Gallery. Today, paintings by Peacock are to be found in the collections of Tate Britain and the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Dimensions: (framed) 79cm x 69½cm (31” x 27½”) Dimensions: (canvas only) 61cm x 50½cm (24” x 20”) Medium: Oil on canvas. Provenance: Private collection of Colonel Sir James Reynolds...
