Starlings in a Winter Landscape by British artist Raymond C. Boothe (1929-2015). Oil on canvas in a hand carved custom frame. Framed the dimensions are 35" wide, 29.38" high and 2.5 inches deep. The canvas measures 24" wide and 18.75" high. Boothe, a Leeds artist, is known as of one of Britain's most accomplished botanical, wildlife and natural history artists. He was represented by the Fine Art Society for 50 years, where he had eight exhibitions. This painting has been in a private collection for the past 30/40 years and was purchased from the art dealer Henri Tiercet. Despite rarely leaving his native Yorkshire, Booth developed an international reputation as a leading botanical and natural history artist. He Spent much of his career in his private studio at home in Alwoodley – an 'inner sanctuary', which no one besides the artist was permitted to enter. Booth's meticulous rendering of wildlife, woodlands, meadows and heathland found admiration far beyond the bounds of his beloved Adel Woods, where he spent much of his time studying and refining his technique, even 'sleeping under hedgerows', remembers Peyton. A plantsman as well as an artist, Booth would cultivate flowers, plants and botanical specimens at home in the garden before painting them in the studio. It was through this extensive and painstaking process that Booth developed an expert knowledge of his subject, a defining feature of his work.
