Rembrandt Bugatti Furniture

By Rembrandt Bugatti
Located in New York, NY
In "Panthère assise" also known as "Seated Panther," Bugatti seems to have been concerned primarily with musculature. The uneven surface exaggerates the contours of muscles which in turn causes a curious effect: weightiness from the amplified muscles and lightness created by the myriad reflecting planes. Bugatti’s sculpture relies on asymmetry, with nearly half of the composition occupied by the panther’s horizontally extended tail. The curve of the tail rises, flowing into the S-shaped arc of the panther’s movement, accentuating the dynamic form of the great cat.

This limited edition is the result of a collaboration between the estates of two renowned French artists, Yves Klein and François Pompon. It is based on the original mould for Pompon’s L’Ours blanc, a cast sculpture of a white polar bear first shown in Paris at the Autumn Salon in 1922. Pompon created this bear a a few times using different media, however the most famous one, created in stone, can be seen at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
This edition, titled L’Ours Pompon, transforms the bear with Klein's iconic International Klein Blue (IKB) pigment which Klein associated with the immaterial values beyond what can be seen or touched. Rembrandt Bugatti (16 October 1884 – 8 January 1916) was an Italian sculptor, known primarily for his bronze sculptures of wildlife subjects. During World War I he volunteered for paramedical work at a military hospital in Antwerp, an experience which triggered in Bugatti the onset of depression—aggravated by financial problems—which eventually caused him to commit suicide on 8 January 1916 in Paris, France. He was only 31 years old.
Born in Milan, into an artistic family, Rembrandt Bugatti was the second son of Carlo Bugatti and his wife, Teresa Lorioli. His older brother Ettore Bugatti became one of the world's most famous automobile manufacturers.
He was given his first name by his uncle, the painter Giovanni Segantini. His father was an important Art Nouveau furniture and jewelry designer who also worked in textiles, ceramics, and silver metalware. As such, Rembrandt Bugatti grew up in an environment where a great many of his parent's friends were from the artistic world. In 1902, the family moved to Paris, where they lived in a community of artisans.
As a child he hung around his father's workshop and was encouraged to try sculpting in plasticine by family friend the Russian sculptor, Prince Paolo Troubetzkoy...
