Contemporary landscape painting, Cornwall Original Artwork, Unframed _________________ The dancing light and rapidly changing skies, hung high above the the landscape of West Cornwall: a harshly beautiful peninsula, jutting out into the wild tireless ocean, shaped and moulded by powerful salt laden Atlantic winds. Criss-crossed by ancient, tangled hedgerows marking the stories of the leathered, labour-roughened hands worn like the granite, coloured as the bronze bracken covered land they toiled endlessly to tame, carving spaces of sanctuary against the raw elements. A plein air painting from the series 'Ebren ha Dor' (Meaning 'Sky and Earth in Cornish). In this series, Sophia's fluid expressive style captures the immediacy of the changing light in the seasonal landscapes, whilst exploring flux and balance in the nature of all things: The freedom of the air and solidity of the soil; Of human narratives written in the wild landscapes; in the sensual interplay of light and shadow. They capture an essence of the equilibrium between wild raw energy and serene stillness; chaos and harmony; and the enduring and the effervescent. This work is part of our exhibition - America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1940s Untitled (Industrial Street), c. 1940s, watercolor on paper mounted on illustration board, estate stamp verso (signed by Peter Corbridge, the artist’s son); 14 x 21 inches; unframed Edgar Corbridge was a Massachusetts-based precisionist painter who mainly worked in watercolor. In 1916, three years after immigrating from England, Corbridge completed a course of study in sign painting at the Fall River, Massachusetts Technical High School and obtained an apprenticeship with the Armour Sign Shop. Throughout his career, Corbridge was mainly self-taught as a fine artist. In 1918, Corbridge received his first recognition as an artist for his entry in a Fall River Women’s Club poster competition. During much of his professional life, Corbridge worked as a self-employed window trimmer and operator of the Corbridge Display Service, supplemented by income from the occasional sale of his paintings. Corbridge gleaned the subjects for his works in and around his home in Fall River, Massachusetts, as well as Provincetown. In the 1940s, Corbridge began to exhibit frequently, including at the annual exhibitions at the Jordan Marsh Company...

Neapolitan gouaches appeared in the eighteenth century when tourism in the Naples area was developing: the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii made this city a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour, the journey made by wealthy Europeans to complete their education. Generally small in size for ease of transport and affordable in price, these gouaches were the ideal travel souvenir that these tourists of the early days were bringing back to capture the idyllic landscapes they had discovered during their journey and to share them with family and friends upon their return at home. The Bay of Naples and the eruptions of Vesuvius are the favourite themes of these views. Here we have a view of the Ovo Castle, which was rebuilt on the island of Partenope, in the middle of the Bay of Naples and about a hundred metres from the shore by the Normans in the 12th century on antique ruins...

Original watercolor over graphite under drawing of the harbor with sailboats in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic by the American artist, Wilmot Emerton Heitland. Signed “Heitland” lower right by the artist. Condition is excellent. Circa 1930. Under UV plexiglass. A similar painting of the same harbor done in 1924 by Wilmot Heitland is in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The artwork is housed in a light blue laminate frame with navy blue mat. Overall framed measurements are 25 by 31 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida estate. Born 1893 in Wisconsin, Wilmot Emerton Heitland was an illustrator and painter trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. For a time, he was president of the American Watercolor Society. He also painted numerous illustrations depicting high society that were published in magazines such as: Collier’s, Women’s Home Companion, Cosmopolitan, and McCall’s, throughout the 20s, 30s, and 40s. Later, Heitland moved on to paint and teach at the Art Club. His paintings can be found in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the Brooklyn Museum; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and locally at the Museum of Fine Arts, William R. Hough and Co., Stetson College of Law Library, and the Poynter Institute. Heitland moved to St. Petersburg because of the active Art Club here. He had a solo show of his work at the Art Club in 1963, and served as the exhibition chairman in 1964. He died in 1969.
