Richard Royce was born in New York on August 18, 1941. After getting his BA and MA in fine arts at the University of Wisconsin, Richard went to France to study with Stanley W. Hayter, the father of modern printmaking. On returning to the US he opened a studio where he produced etchings, cast paper, paintings and sculpture commissions of his work while at the same time helping other artists including Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, Marisol, George Segal, Raphael Soyer, Françoise Gilot and James Rosenquist to realize works in various media. His works are at Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, Historical Society of Wisconsin, Portland Art Museum, Oregon Fine Arts Museum of Long Island, International Paper Corporation, Isla Center at the University of Guam, Byer Museum of the Arts, Musée du Petit Format and Yasuda Life Insurance Company. For approximately 40 years he created prints, cast papers and sculptures. Richard Royce lives in Oregon. He is mostly active as a classical and flamenco guitar artist now.

The work belongs to Miró’s celebrated Forgeron series, in which the artist used aggressive plate biting and physical debossing of the paper to summon the world of the blacksmith’s forge directly onto the printed sheet. Printed in colors on heavy Arches wove paper with the watermark present, the impression was published by Maeght Éditeur, Paris, the central printmaking publisher of Miró’s mature career, and is documented in Jacques Dupin’s Miró Engraver, Vol. II: 1961–1973 (Daniel Lelong Éditeur, Paris, 1989) as plate 363. The composition is built around a bold visual pairing. At its center sits a heavy gray geometric form, rendered through the combined effect of etching, aquatint, and debossing, the latter pressing the contours of the deeply etched plate physically into the paper to create a tactile, sculptural relief that mimics forged industrial iron.
