Robert Philipp Art

American, 1895-1981

Robert Philipp was a portrait, figure and still-life painter. He painted celebrities, landscapes and nudes. Philipp often used his wife, Shelby Post, as a model in his paintings. His concepts and teaching methods inspired several students whom he taught at the Art Students League in New York from 1948–73 and at the National Academy of Design from 1950–75. Philipp's works are on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum in New York.

Beautiful Woman watercolor painting by Robert Philipp
By Robert Philipp
Located in Surfside, FL
A sensitive portrait beautifully rendered in watercolor and gouache. Mid century. I am guessing from the 1940s it is not dated. Robert Philipp (February 2, 1895 – November 22, 1981) was an American painter influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, and known for his nudes, still lifes, and portraits of attractive women and Hollywood stars. Noted art critic Henry McBride called Philipp one of America's top six painters of his generation. He was an instructor of painting at the Art Students League of New York for 33 years. WPA Era. Philipp was Secretary of the National Academy of Design, and National Academician, Benjamin Franklin Fellow, Royal Society of Arts in London. He was married to model and fellow artist Rochelle ("Shelly") Post, who frequently posed for him until her death in 1971. His compositions and painting style have been compared to the art of Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Philip won prizes in most of the important exhibitions of his time, and his paintings are in numerous museums and important private collections. In 1940, Philipp was invited to Los Angeles by Hollywood mogul Louis B. Mayer to paint portraits of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie stars. The same year, Walter Wanger, producer of The Long Voyage Home, directed by John Ford and based on plays by Eugene O'Neill, contracted with Reeves Lewenthal, head of the Associated American Artists gallery in Manhattan, to bring nine well-known artists to the set and paint scenes from the movie and portraits of the actors in character. Robert Philipp The Letter Pastel on Paper Modern Impressionism Framed
By Robert Philipp
Located in Keego Harbor, MI
A lovely unique one-of-a-kind pastel on paper titled The Letter by Robert Philipp. A wonderful example of the artist's signature impressionistic style. The woman is seen reading a letter while drinking a cup of tea with gorgeous views of the water. One can only wonder what story this letter contains that is keeping the reader engaged. A romantic notion depicting simple pleasures in life. Dimensions: 19.5"w x 1.75"d x 17"h (framed). Robert Philipp (1895-1981) received his training at the Art Students League with Frank Vincent DuMond and George Bridgman. He studied at the National Academy of Design with Volk and Maynard. As a boy he lived in a world of musical comedies; he spent time in training in music with an eye in the direction of the grand opera stage. He even spent a year or so in a leading role in one of his father's productions. Then he made a decision to abandon the stage and devote himself entirely to painting. Although often overlooked by art scholars today, Philipp was universally appreciated during his lifetime. He conveyed his subjects with a certain sensitivity and understanding that his viewers could relate to. He was a portrait, figure and still life painter; he painted celebrities...
