Robert Sadler Paintings

British, 1909-2001

Robert Sadler was born in Newmarket, Suffolk, the son of a racehorse trainer. By the age of fourteen, he was drawing and painting airplanes, horses, houses and landscapes. After studying at Eastbourne College and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, he joined the Royal Air Force in 1930 as a pilot from Cambridge University Air Squadron. In 1942, whilst posted to the Air Ministry as ‘Director of Plans’, he attended art school in London and spent the following year in Turkey on special duties, where he lectured at the Turkish Air Staff College and painted and rode racehorses. At the end of the war, Sadler returned to the United Kingdom and took up the post of Station Commander at RAF Binbrook in Lincolnshire. In 1947, he moved to Denmark as Air Attaché to the British Embassy in Copenhagen, where he attended art school and two years later, whilst Vice-President of the RAF Officers’ Selection Board, set-up a studio in Stockbridge whilst attending art school in Winchester. In 1953, Sadler moved to the USA to take up the post as a representative on the NATO Joint Chiefs of Staff Intelligence Committee, during which period he attended the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., where he first encountered the work of the American Abstract Expressionists. Returning to the UK in 1955, he moved back to Newmarket, having retired from the RAF to devote the rest of his life to painting. Sadler attended Heatherley’s School of Fine Art in London, Cambridge Technical College and became a member of the Winchester Art Society and the Cambridge Society of Painters & Sculptors. Sadler’s first one-man show was at Swaffham Prior, Cambridge and from then until 1963, he lived and painted in a largely abstract expressionist style influenced by the École de Paris (Tachisme) of Poliakoff and de Stael and by the contemporary British work of Peter Lanyon, William Scott, Paul Feiler, Bryan Wynter and Adrian Heath. In 1964, Sadler moved to Aldeburgh, Suffolk and built a new Studio at 39 The Terrace, where he lived till his death in August 2001. Sadler hung an Annual Studio Exhibition almost every year between 1965 and 2001 and since his death, Sadler’s works have been exhibited at various galleries throughout Suffolk. In 2007, a group of twelve of Sadler’s paintings was chosen to furnish the set for the Cornwall based TV series, ‘Echo Beach’. In his foreword to the catalog of Bryan Wynter’s one-man show at the Hayward Gallery in 1976, Alan Bowness wrote, "For a short period – say from 1955–65 – British artists believed they were as good as anyone and objectively speaking, I think this was true – certainly one saw the emergence of a remarkable plethora of new talent and a quantity of good painting and sculpture unmatched before or since." Robert Sadler and the work he created during this decade, perfectly illustrate Bowness’s point and fully deserve to be seen in that same light.

Ross Bleckner Abstract Oil Painting
By Ross Bleckner
Located in New York, NY
Ross Bleckner (American, b. 1949) Untitled, c. 20th century Oil on board 18 x 20 in. Ross Bleckner grew up in Hewlett, Long Island, New York; drawing all the time without being aware that other artists existed. He was the middle child between two sisters; his father manufactures electronic parts He attended New York University where Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and others were his teachers. He graduated in 1972, then spent a year at the California Institute of Arts. His contacts in the next few years were very fortuitous; Sol Lewitt and Chuck Close, Carl Andre, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, etc. Bleckner is on the nervous side, beset by self-doubt, insomnia, and gloom. He is unpretentious, although he is bluntly handsome, with olive complexion, and a compact build. He is "10 percent that is superficial and 90 percent that has to do with the depths and that is threatened by living. He is a very complicated individual. He is a very, very morose, deeply feeling, hardworking artist- he takes a lot from within himself - but always, no matter how successful he is, he feels he is going to fall into those depths." 1 Bleckner first exhibited his work in New York in 1974. The following year he was given his first one-man show; he was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial.. Since about 1985 has addressed many of his paintings to the subject of AIDS- both documenting it as a historical phenomenon and commemorating specific individuals who have died. Written and submitted by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California. Bio sourced from the Archives of askArt. Sources include: Ross Bleckner's Mood Indigo...

Florida Oil Painting African American Woman Art Annie Nobles Miller Indian River
Located in Surfside, FL
"Annie Nobles Miller" Abstract Florida landscape oil on board painting Hand signed lower left Inscribed on verso St. Lucie County. Measures: Board 24"H x 30"W; Framed - 32"H x 38"W. Annie Miller was a member of the Indian River School of Painting, which was not a formal school but was a group of mostly African-American Florida working class people who wanted to paint. Following is the explanation of that school and its participants. Indian River School is a name applied to Floridian artists in the 1950's and 1960's. They were heavily influenced by nature. Most of the artists in this movement were African American. Their work is characterized by quick strokes and eschews traditional methods of paintings. The main influence for the group was a man named A.E. Backus, a Bohemian white man who mentored the group of young black artists. The group used to congregate in his studio and learnt to paint from 'Beanie' (as he was called) as a way out of their lower class labour jobs. Their work was powerful, dramatic yet captured the serenity and beauty of the Florida Although the exact count of artists mentored by A.E. Backus remains unknown, experts estimate it to be around 20 individuals, many of whom he supported through college. Albert Ernest "Beanie" Backus (1906–1990) was famous for his vivid, naturalist Florida landscapes capturing a fast-vanishing Florida wild lands. Backus would come to be seen as the seminal Florida landscape painter, and others who followed would emulate him. Primarily of the Indian River and Everglades areas of Florida. Backus was a Native Floridian artist of great importance recreating scenes of Florida's sky, rivers, ocean, back country, unpredictable weather, clouds, and birds. Born in Fort Pierce, FL to a family of talented boat designers and builders. His "Uncle" Reg Goodwin helped Backus as a young painter go to the Parsons School of Fine Art in New York in 1924. He was referred to as “Florida’s painter laureate,” and the “Dean of Florida’s landscape painters.”In addition to his influence on the Florida Highwaymen painters (Alfred Hair...

"Harvard vs Yale" Charles Green Shaw, Football, Ivy League Sports, Abstract
By Charles Green Shaw
Located in New York, NY
Charles Green Shaw Harvard vs. Yale, 1944 Signed and dated on the reverse Oil on canvasboard 9 x 12 inches Provenance: Harvey and Francois Rambach, New Jersey Private Collection, California Washburn Gallery, New York D. Wigmore Fine Art, New York Private Collection, New York Charles Green Shaw, born into a wealthy New York family, began painting when he was in his mid-thirties. A 1914 graduate of Yale, Shaw also completed a year of architectural studies at Columbia University. During the 1920s Shaw enjoyed a successful career as a freelance writer for The New Yorker, Smart Set and Vanity Fair, chronicling the life of the theater and café society. In addition to penning insightful articles, Shaw was a poet, novelist and journalist. In 1927 he began to take a serious interest in art and attended Thomas Hart Benton's class at the Art Students League briefly in New York. He also studied privately with George Luks, who became a good friend. Once he had dedicated himself to non-traditional painting, Shaw's writing ability made him a potent defender of abstract art. After initial study with Benton and Luks, Shaw continued his artistic education in Paris by visiting numerous museums and galleries. From 1930 to 1932 Shaw's paintings evolved from a style imitative of Cubism to one directly inspired by it, though simplified and more purely geometric. Returning to the United States in 1933, Shaw began a series of abstracted cityscapes of skyscrapers he called Manhattan Motifs which evolved into his most famous works, the shaped canvases he called Plastic Polygons. The 1930s were productive years for Shaw. He showed his paintings in numerous group exhibitions, both in New York and abroad, and was also given several one-man exhibitions. Shaw had his first one-man exhibition at the Valentine Dudensing Gallery in New York in 1934, which included 25 Manhattan Motif paintings and 8 abstract works. In the spring of 1935 Shaw was introduced to Albert Gallatin and George L.K. Morris. Gallatin was so impressed with Shaw's work, he broke a policy against solo exhibitions at his museum, the Gallery of Living Art, and offered Shaw an exhibition there. In the summer of 1935 Shaw traveled to Paris with Gallatin and Morris who provided introductions to many great painters. Shaw regularly spent time with John Ferren and Jean Hélion. The following year Gallatin organized an exhibition called Five Contemporary American Concretionists at the Reinhardt Gallery that included Shaw, Ferren, and Morris, Alexander Calder, and Charles Biederman...
