Royal Worcester for USA Market Aesthetic Movement Floral Triangular Jug

By Royal Worcester

Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire

A very fine Aesthetic Movement Royal Worcester triangular shaped jug hand painted with flowers and butterflies and made for Bailey Banks & Biddle in Philadelphia dated 1882. The porcelain jug is very reminiscent of the designs of Christopher Dresser with its angles and patterning and is formed in the shape of a triangle on a slightly wider foot with a decorative scroll and loop terminal handle and with a shaped top rim with a raised pouring spout with a low relief embossed stylized floral motif below and with an embossed floral edge border around the upper rim. The jug has a Z pattern border around the foot and is hand painted with floral and butterfly patterns around the body in colored enamels on ivory ground. The handle, upper rim, the embossed design and Z patterning around the foot are all painted in a satin brown color and highlighted with gilding which has also been used to outline the hand painted patterning to the body. The jug has a puce printed maker’s mark to the base along with a date code for 1882 and has puce printed retailers mark for Bailey Banks & Biddle. There are further painted marks and an impressed number to the rim. It is known that Christopher Dresser sold...

By Minton

Located in Philadelphia, PA

Attributed to Minton pottery in Staffordshire, England, a scarce sized set of majolica glazed pitchers in the Palissy style, circa 1870s. The Aesthetic Period pitchers are molded with a raised nut vine pattern with leaves in light and dark green, and closed buds. The vine handle is ‘held’ in place with green shoots, the tight buds are glazed in cream encased in light spring green leaves. The body is finished in an iridescent brown, the interior in a beautiful turquoise. A turquoise glazed underside. The larger jug is impressed with the number two, possibly referring to size, as this is the middle size of what would have been a set of three graduated pitchers...

To identify Royal Worcester, look on the bottom of any pieces for maker's stamps. These varied over the years, but nearly all the markings clearly say "Royal Worcester." Many pieces also feature a code or symbol that is useful when dating Royal Worcester porcelain. For example, an item produced in 1875 will showcase the letter "E," while those crafted in 1932 feature three circles along with “Made in England” text. The Museum of Royal Worcester has an in-depth reference guide that you can use to assess your marks and determine which pattern your piece features. If you need additional assistance, use the services of a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer. Shop a collection of Royal Worcester porcelain on 1stDibs.

Royal Worcester china is currently made in India, as of January 2022. Previously, the company produced porcelain ware at its own facilities in Stoke-on-Trent, UK. The company opened there in 1751 and still has its headquarters in the city. Find a selection of Royal Worcester china on 1stDibs.

Some Royal Worcester porcelain is oven safe, however, any pieces with a gold band should not be placed in the oven. Royal Worcester porcelain can withstand a temperature of about 120C. To identify a Royal Worcester pattern, first look at the maker's marking, usually positioned on the bottom of a piece. Because Royal Worcester changed its markings many times over the years, you can compare the one on your piece to images shared on trusted online resources and get a rough idea of when it was made. Once you have an estimated year of production, examine online visual identification guides to see what patterns the maker produced during that time frame and match them to your piece. Alternatively, you can contact a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer for assistance. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Royal Worcester porcelain.
