Ryan Shane Owen Paintings

American, b. 1975

Ryan Shane Owen is an artist and musician from Vancouver, British Columbia. Heavily influenced by the dynamics and expression of musical composition, Owen’s works capture movement in stillness and sound in silence. Early on, Owen’s curiosity for nature led to an effervescent, artistic expression characterized by action, energy and progression. Owen’s works are represented by Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles and have been exhibited and collected in the US and Canada. Owen is inspired by many aspects of the arts including music and dance, architecture, calligraphy, textiles, fashion, op art, cubism, art deco, art nouveau, abstract expressionism and impressionism. Owen has worked in various mediums including illustration, silk screening, oil painting, sculpture and video. For Owen, the “harmonies of life” shape the foundation for creative interpretation through a fusion of sound and space. Merging aspects of the sculptural with the pictorial, his artworks grew out of experimentation with leftover scraps from building construction and a childhood propensity for puzzles. Constructed with metal, wood, cardboard, paper, glue and acrylic, oil and enamel/spray paint, the pieces incorporate Owen’s experience with techniques such as paper mache, sewing and woodworking. Owen studied at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, Vancouver and British Columbia Victoria College of Art, Victoria, British Columbia.

Stephen Edlich Ouverture, with Cypress Forms, 1982 Signed, dated and titled on the stretcher Acrylic paint, mixed media, and burlap on canvas 60 x 40 inches An artist who worked in the post-cubist and constructivist traditions, Stephen P. Edlich gained a considerable amount of acclaim in the 1970s and 1980s for his collages, sculpture, and paintings. His promising career was cut short due to his untimely death at age 45 in 1989. Edlich was born in New York City. He received his undergraduate degree with a major in fine arts studies from New York University in 1967. During his college years, he traveled to London, where he met the art dealer Victor Waddington and created his first white on white collage. In that same year, he attended a major exhibition of the work of Ben Nicholson, which would be influential source in his art. Edlich returned to England in 1967, where he met Barbara Hepworth and Patrick Heron in London and traveled to St. Ives, Cornwall, long a favorite artists' haunt. Edlich began creating acrylic reliefs...

Red and Orange #1 - bright, abstract, minimalist, acrylic on plexiglass

By David Cantine

Located in Bloomfield, ON

Curated circles of silver, black, tangerine orange, and cherry red define the dove grey ground of this square minimalist acrylic painting on plexiglass. The areas between the shapes are completed with custard yellow and maroon. This work comes framed. Framed dimensions are approximately 20.5 x 20.5 inches. Cantine's work is a poetic and intellectual exploration of a pictorial problem, color as structure which has infinite variations. Cantine was quoted in the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art 2000: "For the past 26 years, I have painted essentially the same still life, which began as a pair of apples and its shadow, and evolved under pressure of color into the present imagery." Cantine may be referred to as a post-minimalist, a term coined by Robert Pincus-Witten in 1971 to describe work with a minimalist tendency but that uses modest materials and aims towards a pure formalist aesthetic. David Cantine is a senior Canadian painter who has been exploring the still life for many years. Cantine was born in Jackson...
