'Moraine' Biomorphic Sofa by Zaha Hadid for Sawaya & Moroni Italy, 2000, Signed
By Sawaya & Moroni, Zaha Hadid Architects, Zaha Hadid
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This incredible and rare biomorphic sofa is by Zaha Hadid for Milano Italy based maker Sawaya & Moroni. Named 'Moraine', this double sided curved sofa from the Z-Scape series features hair-on-hides, over foam and metal, in a sumptuous purple-burgundy color. It is impossible to pinpoint the color as it changes depending on how the light hits the surface, changing from deeper cooler purple tones to warmer burgundy tones. The wild freeform shape gives opportunity to use in a myriad of ways to the user, from a chaise longue, to daybed, to tête-à-tête, to a non-standard couch, you can sit, lay, sleep, lounge whatever in this spectacular piece of functional art. Designed by famed architect Zaha Hadid (1950-2016) in 2000, this example produced shortly thereafter, is a collectors dream, so few were made and the ones that were are held in private and corporate collections, museums and exhibits worldwide including die Neue Pinakothek Museum in Munich, MAAS in Australia, and the Donna Karan headquarters in New York. Made of polyurethane foam with an asymmetrical freeform shape and covered in Red 'Fantasy Leather', a special hide produced by Sawaya & Moroni to create a 'pony skin' like effect. The edge of base with leather label “Sawaya & Moroni / MILANO - ITALY” About the designer: Zaha Hadid has emerged as one of the preeminent architects and designers at the turn of the century, creating dynamic and complex forms. Awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2004, she is the first woman to receive the prestigious honor. Although her built works are few in number, her impact on the world of architecture and design has been enormous. The Moraine sofa...
