Serge Charchoune Paintings

Russian, 1888-1975

Russian-French artist and poet Serge Charchoune was born at Buguruslan in Russia and studied painting at Moscow Academy of Art. In 1912, after deserting the army, Charchoune arrived in Paris and immediately enrolled as a student of the Cubist painter Henri Le Fauconnier. Upon the outbreak of the First World War, Charchoune took refuge in Barcelona, Spain, where he befriended exiled Parisian Cubists Marie Laurencin, Albert Gleizes and Francis Picabia. Seizing the cultural moment, during the 1920s, Charchoune briefly formed his own Parisian Dada group called Palata Poetov (the House of Poets), created a Russian-language Dada magazine called the Perevoz Dada (the Travelling Dada) and published an anthology of German, French and Russian Dadaist poetry.

Devoted throughout his life to the radicalism and transgressiveness of Dadaism’s anti-art, Charchoune refused to participate in any other movement. However, during the early 1950s, his work became more abstract and his palette almost monochrome.

After his 1922 solo exhibition at the famous Der Sturm gallery in Berlin, Charchoune returned to Paris where he met Ozenfant, who led the Purist movement. Subsequently, Charchoune began to introduce elements of the Purist manifesto to his own work. M. Seuphor, in the Dictionary of Abstract Painting (London, 1958), describes how “Some of his best canvases owe their inspiration to the music of Bach or Beethoven [...] his work reaches unequalled heights of delicacy in modulations of a single colour. These pictures, which are a kind of spiritual exercise for the eye, must be numbered among the best examples of pure painting.”

Phaidon’s Dictionary of Twentieth Century Art documents that “In 1923 he began to analyse the relationship between art and music, which has been the inspiration for the delicate monochrome abstracts of his mature period.” In an interview with Michel Ragon in Jardin des Arts (Paris, 1966), Charchoune states, “Music gives me the theme. While listening to music, I see the painting with my eyes closed, like a coloured seam stretching out before me.”

The composition begins with a blue green toned background of acrylic wash. A grid of box-like patterns in sky blue, green, grey, and black with white line work are stacked to create an irregular shape or an "imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on vellum is complemented by a simple black frame with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and wire backing. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang. About the artist: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. A central checkerboard formation floats over a ground of pastel color or washes of grey or cream. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. The artist recently retired from her decades career teaching at Marist College and is now devoted full time to her art making. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. His artistic journey led him to study at several prestigious institutions, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art, Wharton School of Finance and Commerce, and the University of Paris in 1919. In Paris, from 1919-1934, Hiler supported himself as a jazz musician and pianist for The Jockey Club, all while immersing himself in the European art scene.
