Shirley Gilman was born in Conneaut, Ohio. She was a resident of Los Gatos, California, where she began painting nature and still life scenes. Gilman was very involved in the music and art community, was an avid painter and enjoyed painting nature scenes inspired by the beauty of the Redwood Forest and the dogwood trees in bloom each spring.

He traveled and studied in England, eventually exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.Lever moved to New York around 1910, painting scenes of the city.
