Sigrid Sandström Art
Swedish, b. 1972
Sigrid Sandström studied at Cooper Union School of Art, New York, NY (1995); earned a BFA at Academie Minerva, Groningen, The Netherlands (1997); attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, ME (2000); and received an MFA in painting from Yale University, New Haven, CT (2001). She has been awarded numerous fellowships and residencies, including at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, Stockholm (2016); the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, New York, NY (2008); and the Core Fellowship at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX (2001–03).
Sandström has exhibited widely across the United States and in her native Sweden. Recent solo exhibitions include shows at Inman Gallery, Houston, TX (2016); Anat Ebgi, Los Angeles, CA (2016); Cecilia Hillström Gallery, Stockholm (2015); and Galleri Gunnar Olsson, Stockholm (2015). Her work is in the public collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Houston, TX; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Borås Konstmuseum, Borås, Sweden; Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, KS; and Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT.
Sandström is currently a Professor of Fine Arts at the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm, Sweden. She lives and works in Stockholm.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Amelia was born in Cincinnati in 1962 and stayed in the area until 1996 when she moved to Colorado. Amelia attended the Arts Academy of Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati. She was actually a Documentary Photography Major in college and brings that sense of “composing inside the viewfinder” to her paintings.Her work as been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country. Amelia has had work on Emmy Award winning television shows such as Will & Grace in the 90’s through the mid 2000’s. Now she has found a more purposeful & powerful work with the introspective look of her current direction. The relationship of the conscious and unconscious is her subject matter now. The relationship between health and illness, what and how are they both defined.

Building each work in a slow accumulation of additions, reconsiderations, and erasures, Sandström places shapes into compositions that slip between two-dimensional flatness and the illusion of three-dimensional depth. Some painted forms look like pieces of paper collaged onto the surface of the painting, while others can appear as pieces of paper caught at odd perspectival angles, as though swirling in a windstorm. Bar shapes uncannily resemble strips of the masking tape used to create the sharp edges of her shapes, provoking further feelings of visual cohesion, negation, and uncertainty. Throughout her works, painted elements simultaneously jut and recede, as well as obscure, delimit, and cancel out each other. The occasional translucent shape epitomizes this indeterminate relationship: Sandström at once invites deep looking and holds the viewer at a distance.
