Sir Leslie Ward

Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine of social, literary and political content which was published in London from 1868 until February 5, 1914. It was favorite of Victorian and later, Edwardian England. Most popular of its features were the wonderful full page caricatures of famous men and women of the day. These lithographs remain Vanity Fair’s greatest legacy. The two most famous artists who worked for Vanity Fair were “Ape” (Carlo Pellegrini) and “Spy” (Leslie Ward), but many other artists provided images for this long running series of delightful caricatures.

Vanity Fair Political Caricature by Spy, Westminster Terrace Scene, 1893 Description: A large and highly characteristic Vanity Fair chromolithograph titled On the Terrace, A Political Spectacle: “The Ayes have it – the Noes have it”, drawn by Sir Leslie Ward (“Spy”) and published on 30 November 1893. This sophisticated satirical composition captures prominent British political figures assembled on a terrace overlooking Westminster, presenting both a humorous and perceptive commentary on late Victorian parliamentary life. Sir Leslie Ward was among the most celebrated contributors to Vanity Fair, renowned for combining sharp caricature with refined portraiture. His work often balanced satire with psychological insight, allowing viewers to recognise not only the physical likeness but also the political persona of each sitter. The scene brings together several influential personalities including Arthur James Balfour, Sir Austen Chamberlain, Joseph Chamberlain, Sir John Eldon Gorst, Sir William Vernon Harcourt, Justin McCarthy, Anthony John Mundella, and Sir Richard Temple...

Antique Vanity Fair Print 'A.A.A' Montague Shearman – 1895

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique Vanity Fair Print 'A.A.A' Montague Shearman – 1895 This is an original Vanity Fair lithograph dated July 4, 1895, titled "A.A.A," featuring Montague Shearman, a distinguished British judge and athlete. Illustrated by "Wag" (the pseudonym of artist Alfred Thompson), this caricature highlights Shearman's association with the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA), as indicated by the title. Shearman is shown in a thoughtful pose, holding a top hat and umbrella behind his back, dressed in formal attire. His observant stance reflects his keen role as a legal figure and sports official. Published by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd., this print was part of Vanity Fair's "Men of the Day" series, which caricatured influential figures of the time. Montague Shearman was notable not only for his legal career but also for his contributions to amateur athletics, making this lithograph a fascinating piece of sports and legal history. This artwork is perfect for collectors of Vanity Fair prints, those with an interest in the history of athletics, or admirers of Victorian caricatures...
