Origin: When he saw the elegant, translucent pierced marble “jali” windows in the palaces of Mughal India, the renowned designer Paul Mathieu realized that he had discovered a wonderful new concept in lighting design. He decided to backlight a hanging marble jali panel to create an elegant and sophisticated statement in light and stone. Manufacture: First, a solid sheet of marble is hand carved into a curved, gently billowing panel. Pierced jali tracery work is then hand carved into the surface, through which light and air pass with ease.
