Steven Campbell was a Scottish artist who created complex and humorous paintings with roots in performance and installation art. Campbell graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1982 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Pratt Institute in New York the same year. The artist rapidly gained recognition in America, and after a successful period abroad returned to Glasgow in 1987. He remained in Scotland for the rest of his career, developing his position as a link between Scottish artists of the previous generation, and the emerging artists of the 1990s. Before studying at Glasgow School of Art Campbell was an engineer at the steelworks on the outskirts of Glasgow. After seven years at the steelworks he decided to pursue art. Born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1921, artist Norman Rubington studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he participated in a number of group exhibitions and his first solo show at the Salon d'Automne in 1948, which received high acclaim. Following his studies, he returned to the States and exhibited in a series of shows in Boston, New York and San Francisco. Rubington was awarded a grant from the Tiffany Foundation, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Prix de Rome prize and was a fellow of the McDowell Art Colony in New Hampshire. Rubington exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, Paris, City Center, New York, Carl Siembab Gallery, Boston, Berman Museum of Art, Pennsylvania, American Academy, Rome, Museum of Fine Arts, San Francisco, Corcoran Gallery, Washington D.C., Art Institute of Chicago, American Art Gallery, Copenhagen, Rome Art Club, and Museo Berera, Milan. The painter submerges landscapes, forests, materials and terrestrial objects under the cold and silent ocean currents. A feeling of weightlessness dominates the viewer, while the moon floats between anemones, sea urchins and posidonia forests. The blue-green darkness is broken up with nuclei and horizons of light, contrasting with the ambiguous and mysterious atmosphere of the compositions. TECHNIQUE The work has been carried out with an innovative technique, where the fluidized oil is transformed into an undulating sea, to create impossible shapes on paper, which are later outlined by the airbrush, the palette knife and the brush.
