Teresa Oaxaca Art

American, b. 1988

Classical Realist artist Teresa Oaxaca was born in California in 1987. She received her art training through some of today’s most relevant classical art academies and traditional artists. In 2005, Oaxaca traveled to Florence, Italy where she spent four years studying at the Angel Academy of Fine Art, followed by completing graduate courses at the Florence Academy of Art. In 2008, she received an apprenticeship with the celebrated Norwegian figurative artist Odd Nerdrum at his studio in Stavern, Norway. From 2010 to 2012, Oaxaca received additional instruction at the Art League of Alexandria, Virginia where she studied under classical artists, Robert Liberace and Paul Lucchesi. Recently, she spent four months touring European museums to study the works of the Old Masters.

Teresa Oaxaca uses her personal collection of Victorian and Baroque costumes, and masks and dolls as symbolic metaphors in her paintings as well as opportunities to expose unique characters that heighten the psychological aspect of a scene. Her provocative, yet opulently beautiful, paintings are capturing media attention in print publications as well as in video interviews. In an article published in the Spring 2016 issue of the California Art Club Newsletter, art writer Molly Siple commented that “Oaxaca’s current work offers the viewer a lush fantasy world of unusual paintings of subject matter in which human and still-life elements mix.”

Oaxaca explains, “Most art from past cultures used imagination and fantasy to interpret and explore aspects of the real world. Art, for me, exhibits my need for beauty and order by presenting it through a spiritual, sympathetic, and uncanny filter.” She adds, “My work is about pleasing the eye. I paint light and the way it falls. Simple observation reveals beauty, which I often find in the unconventional. Because of this, I have learned to take particular delight in unusual pairings of subject matter.” Oaxaca’s paintings maintain traditional craftsmanship, as she explores and utilizes new pigments, tools, and materials. Her paintings begin with preparatory sketches to address design concepts, and then, she uses multiple layers of oil paint to build an illusion of light and form.

Teresa Oaxaca currently spends her time between Florence, Italy, and Arlington, Virginia where she has her studio.

Provenance Acquired by the gallery directly from the artist Signed "ESA" on upper left corner Artist Statement “The 19th century painter Anders Zorn was a big influence for me on this work. I was looking at his 'Dance in Gopsmor Cottage' while painting, and trying to limit myself to brushes no small than an 8. I am quite satisfied with the light effect I achieved. As you can see I really boosted up the highlight on those stockings! It was a case where the sun had streamed in through an east light window (unwelcome at the time), rendering the model's legs impossibly bright. I've used a very thick impasto and even some cadmium lemon to try and convey the impression of light I was seeing. While executing this painting it occurred to me that this was the kind of unusual lighting...

“Dancer's Dream,” an original oil on canvas by Robert K. White, is a piece for the true collector. White’s careful attention to detail and vivid use of greens, browns, and whites project from the painting, immediately capturing the viewer's attention and highlighting the artist's keen ability to capture emotion and life - all in a brushstroke. White's talent for depicting light and shadow provides the foundation for him to deliver subjects and scenes to the viewer's eye. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for dancers, the ballet, portraits, and color-rich works of art. In the artist’s own words, “I don’t paint what is inside of me; I paint what I see outside of me. I’m an observer. If I see something and I feel an affinity for it, something just clicks in my head. I’ll make the decision right then and there to paint that particular subject during that particular moment. It’s a perfect moment. Once something has caught my eye and I’ve heard the “perfect” click, it’s like a photograph has been taken in my mind’s eye. I only have a few days of clarity with that image. I have to start the painting quickly or else it will be gone and I will lose that image forever.” Artist: ROBERT KENNETH WHITE...
