This pair of large Dutch Delft plates, traditionally referred to as chargers, was hand-painted at the renowned De Porceleyne Bijl (The Axe) factory in Delft, circa 1780. Each plate measures 12.25 inches in diameter and is centered with a carefully balanced composition depicting a basket overflowing with flowers, rendered with assurance and clarity in rich cobalt blue. The surrounding border alternates between scrolling floral sprays and diamond-patterned panels, creating a rhythmic frame that guides the eye across the surface. Warm ochre-painted rims provide contrast against the white tin-glazed ground, lending definition and visual depth while neatly enclosing the decoration. The pair remains in excellent condition and reflects the confident workmanship and refined decorative control associated with late 18th-century production at The Axe factory. A beautiful set of five blue and white Delft vases, this faience collection was hand-painted in Holland, circa 1900. The three bulbous vases are lidded, each with a finial depicting a rampant lion with a ball in its forepaws. Beneath the lion is a mottled background (on the front side only), with a foliate and floral margent. Each vase has the same scene painted on the front of the main body: a couple walking through a field surrounded by flowers. The opposite side has a floral rinceaux above a foliate branch. Painted in a similar fashion, the two concave vases are without lids. The side opposite from the cartouche of the couple has floral margents. All five vases have canted corners on the base. We are pleased to offer this pair of blue and white Delft chargers are each decorated in the center with a large but delicate vase filled with chrysanthemums and peonies. The chinoiserie design on the center of the platter is derived from Chinese decoration where auspicious flowers were put in bamboo baskets as attractive interior decorative elements. The border of the charger is adorned with four floral panels, which alternate with four panels with fish-net patterns.. Made in the 18th century, circa 1780, both chargers have the mark of "The Axe". The edge of each of the chargers is painted with orange slip in the traditional style .
