Thorvald Bindesbøll Table Lamps

Danish, 1846-1908

Over a century after his death, Thorvald Bindesbøll is remembered for his wonderfully artistic ceramic designs, smithed creations and imaginative lighting fixtures. The Danish architect, designer and artist brought a creative eye and meticulous hand to everything he made.

Born in Copenhagen, Bindesbøll’s early education was unconventional. His father, the famed architect Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, taught him at home. Growing up around his father’s students and colleagues, he was challenged to match them in intellect and artistic acuity.

In 1876, Bindesbøll graduated with an architecture degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Instead of just focusing on architecture, Bindesboll developed a love of art, with a special emphasis on ceramics.

He worked for a time at Frauens Levarefabrik and then for Johan Wallmann from 1883 to 1890. Throughout the remainder of the 19th century, Bindesbøll collaborated with craftspeople from diverse disciplines, including ceramicists, silversmiths and goldsmiths.

Bindesbøll spent a great deal of time designing silver works. The success of these designs led to factories producing inferior copies.

Bindesbøll died in 1908, leaving behind numerous design sketches and an eclectic body of work that continues to be prized by collectors today.

Art Nouveau Lamp, Patinated Bronze and Stained Glass, Tiffany style, 1980's
By Louis Comfort Tiffany, Tiffany Studios
Located in VÉZELAY, FR
We are delighted to offer this stunning Art Nouveau style salon lamp, a faithful reinterpretation of the "Hanging Head Dragonfly Shade and Mosaic and Turtleback Base" model created by Tiffany Studios in 1906 and attributed to the renowned artist Clara Pierce Wolcott Driscoll (1861-1944). This artwork is notably displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago. This high-quality piece, made in the 1980s, stands out for its exceptional craftsmanship and high level of execution. It embodies both the refinement of the Art Nouveau style and the timeless elegance of Tiffany creations. Description of the Artwork: Bronze Base: The base of this lamp, made of bronze, is a work of art in itself. It follows the design of the original model, while being enhanced with artistic details that showcase the exceptional skill of the artisans. Nature-inspired motifs, characteristic of Art Nouveau, are finely crafted, with an elegant patina that gives the lamp a sculptural dimension. Base Covered in "Turtleback Shells" / Glass Tiles and Mosaic: The lamp's base features a combination of glass tiles and mosaics, creating a fascinating visual effect. The glass tiles, reminiscent of turtle shells, were used by Tiffany in their original creations, where light passes through the glass pieces to reveal a play of shadows and light embedded in a harmonious composition. The lighting effect is spectacular, especially when the lamp is lit, as the light diffused through the glass elements creates a warm and enchanting atmosphere. Dragonfly Stained Glass...

Early 20th Century Green Marble and Gilt Bronze Table Lamp
Located in Richmond, London
A superb quality gilt bronze mounted urn in Verde Antico marble, now fitted as a table lamp. France or Italy, late 19th – early 20th century. Why we like it This table lamp is crafted from rare Verde Antico marble, quarried in Larissa, Thessaly, Greece. Known for its deep green color and distinct white and black veining, this marble is valued among collectors and designers for its unique character and scarcity. The stone is paired with finely cast gilt bronze mounts that provide a pleasing contrast and add subtle elegance to the piece. Verde Antico marble is considered rare and historically significant. The Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones at Oxford University Museum of Natural History catalogue entry 566. (143.2) reads: “Another of a lighter green, with white and more definite black markings. The two amazing tables in the Galleria degli Animali in the Vatican Museum are of this type. (Very rare).” Image attached to the listing. The Galleria degli Animali, or Hall of Animals, was created during the papacy of Pius VI (1775–1799) as a “stone zoo” of sorts, using ancient sculptures that were often restored and occasionally reimagined. This ambitious project brought together prominent artists of the 18th century, including Francesco Antonio Franzoni from Carrara. The artworks in this space reflect themes of nature and hunting, with coloured marbles chosen to suggest the textures and colours of animal fur, feathers, or to create eye-catching contrasts. See last two images in the listing. Combining Verde Antico marble with high-quality gilt bronze accents, this lamp is a distinctive piece that brings historical character and timeless appeal to any space. May be wired for any country. Lampshade not included. Height without shade: 53 cm / 21 in. Would you like to see more beautiful things from our collection?
