Tria Giovan Figurative Photography
b. 1961
Tria Giovan was born in 1961, in Chicago, Illinois, and was raised on St Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands. Her photography has been defined by in-depth, timely, and thoughtful subject exploration that intertwines the personal and the observational. Giovan frequently works with material from her archive which spans multiple decades, allowing her to investigate the concept of legacy. The long-term nature of her projects is driven by a curiosity for the world and a desire to create images that reflect her humanist engagement with it. A documentarian with archival intentions, she is the author of Cuba: The Elusive Island (1996), Sand Sea Sky (2012), The Cuba Archive (2017) and Loisaida (2023). Exhibited in the US and internationally, her photographs are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Library of Congress, the Museum of the City of New York, and the New York Public Library.

Over the course of a career lasting half a century, Slim Aarons (1916-2006) portrayed high society, aristocracy, authors, artists, business icons, the celebrated and their milieu. In doing so, he captured a golden age of wealth, privilege, beauty and leisure that occurred alongside—but quite separate from—the cultural and political backdrop of the second half of the Twentieth Century.

Silver and sepia tone photographic print of an indigenous spearfisher by Edward Sheriff Curtis, image circa 1901 (American, 1868-1952), as a 1974 copy of (and printed from negatives derived from) the original Edward Curtis copper gravure plate, by Jean-Antony du Lac (1929-2002). Curtis used a process he mastered of creating orotones, which are photographs on glass, which Jean-Anthony du Lac spent years mastering. Born in France and raised in New York City, Jean-Anthony du Lac moved west to San Francisco in 1957. Curtis' images of North American Indians; and he mastered the process of creating orotones, which are photographic reproductions on glass.
