Umaguma Furniture

Mexican, b. 1997

Umaguma emerged from a deep awakening—a reclamation of identity and the pursuit of freedom.

It is a reclamation of ancestral roots once severed, a journey to reconnect and redefine. As children of immigrants, we carve a path beyond societal standards and stereotypes, reimagining what is possible.

At the heart of Umaguma lies the duality of the cross-cultural experience, a Chicana identity woven between two worlds, two countries, and two histories. Within my textiles, you’ll find the colors and textures of pain, resilience, and liberation, stories inherited from our abuelos y madres. These narratives come alive through traditional techniques and materials, fused with contemporary ideas and the boundless freedom of our generation.

Umaguma embodies energy in motion, expressed through fluid, shape-shifting designs that celebrate freedom in every form. Each piece is a reflection of duality, an exploration of what it means to remember, to soften, to become.

This charming Early American hand-hooked rug, created in the early 1900s in the New England region, is a beautiful expression of traditional American folk art. Designed with a classic floral motif, the composition features blossoms rendered in rich, luminous vintage tones, radiating warmth, whimsy, and nostalgic elegance. The colorful floral field is thoughtfully framed by a deep brown border, providing visual structure and contrast while enhancing the painterly quality of the design. Whether displayed as wall art or used as a decorative floor textile, this piece offers both visual impact and historical authenticity.
