Dutch painter, brother of the painters Jacob and Matthijs Maris, he is considered one of the leading representatives of the Hague School, and the one in whom an impressionist approach was most apparent. His favorite themes were landscapes and rural life, on which subject he declared: "I don't paint cows, but light effects".
