Artist: William Bailey
Untitled (Still Life)
Located in Fairlawn, OH
Untitled (Still Life) Etching, aquatint and soft ground, 2001 Signed in pencil (see photo) Edition: 260 Published by the Print Club of Cleveland, Publication 80, 2002 Printed by Felix Harlan at Harlan and Weaver, New York William Bailey, Modernist Figurative Painter, Dies at 89 He swathed his nudes and still lifes of eggs, vases, bottles and bowls in a breathless, deceptively serene atmosphere heavy with mystery. The painter William Bailey in 2009. He was never given a career survey in a major museum, but his influence, particulary on students at Yale, was deep.Credit...Ford Bailey By William Grimes for the New York Times April 18, 2020 William Bailey, whose pristine, idealized still lifes and female nudes made him one of the leading figures in the return of figurative art in the 1980s, died on April 13 at his home in Branford, Conn. He was 89. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Alix Bailey. Beyond his painting, Mr. Bailey influenced generations of students in his many years as a teacher at the Yale School of Art. In some of his best-known work, Mr. Bailey arranged simple objects — the eggs, bowls, bottles and vases that he once called “my repertory company” — along a severe horizontal shelf, or on a plain table, swathing them in a breathless, deceptively serene atmosphere heavy with mystery. His muted ochres, grays and powdery blues conjured up a still, timeless world inhabited by Platonic forms, recognizable but uncanny, in part because he painted from imagination rather than “They are at once vividly real and objects in dream, and it is the poetry of this double life that elevates all this humble crockery to the realm of pictorial romance,” Hilton Kramer wrote in The New York Times in 1979. Mr. Bailey’s female figures, some clothed in a simple shift or robe and others partly or entirely nude, are disconcertingly impassive, implacable and unreadable, fleshly presences breathing an otherworldly air. The critic Mark Stevens, writing in Newsweek in 1982, credited Mr. Bailey with helping to “restore representational art to a position of consequence in modern painting.” But his version of representation was entirely idiosyncratic, seemingly traditional but in fact “a modernism so contrarian,” the artist Alexi Worth wrote in a catalog essay for the Betty Cuningham Gallery in 2010, “that it feels, despite its historical sophistication, almost like a brand of outsider art.” William Harrison Bailey...

Christmas Tree, Original Holiday Greeting Card Illustration
By Charlotte Sternberg
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Original holiday greeting card Illustration of a Christmas tree decorated with ornaments and bows. Medium: Egg Tempera on Gesso Panel Signature: Unsigned Charlotte Joan Sternberg was born in Meriden, Connecticut in 1920. Early on, she became interested in art, and her parents encouraged her efforts. She attended public schools in the area, as well as taking art classes at the technical school. Afterwards, she attended the Yale School of Art. Her fellow classmates included Rudolph Zallinger, who executed the dinosaur mural at the Peabody Museum in New Haven; Jean Day Zallinger, renowned book illustrator; and Edward Paier, founder of the Paier College of Art. It was there that she became interested in egg tempera, and most of her well-known artwork was done in this medium. She was one of a number of Yale artists who revived this medium.(She did not work professionally in oils, although she sometimes used gouache or watercolor.) She went on to a long career in commercial illustration. She worked extensively for J.Walter Thompson, doing advertising art for such companies as Esso (later Exxon), Textron, and Lederle pharmaceuticals. While she did a variety of subjects, she was best known for her Americana themes, particularly snow scenes of historic New England. Many of these pieces were published as Christmas cards for American Artists Group. She also taught for many years at the Paier College of Art. She also did a number of limited edition prints for Greenwich Workshop. Her art is used on such items as tapestry pillows, puzzles, and decorative flags. She was commissioned to do several portraits, including those of Gov.John...

Nude With Curly Hair (early full frontal female nude pencil drawing, leg raised)
Located in New Orleans, LA
This intimate nude portrait shows a curly-haired young woman facing the artist with her right leg propped up. This early pencil drawing is signed and dated 1976 by one of America's premiere figurative artists. This drawing was created before the controversy created in 1982 when Newsweek published a Bailey on its cover. See below: "Newsweek magazine may have painted itself into a corner by featuring a nude portrait on the cover of its June 7 issue. Readers, newsstand operators and the Moral Majority all want to cover up the cover. A city attorney for Lubbock, Texas, says the magazine may be a violation of a city ordinance because it exposes minors to pornography. Stores and newsstands selling it could be prosecuted. The artwork in question is 'Portrait of S' by William Bailey, now a Yale University painting instructor, and shows a stark, pensive woman sitting with her dressed pulled down to reveal her breasts. The accompanying article is entitled 'Revival of Realism.' A Sarasota, Fla., magazine wholesaler went so far as place gum-backed pasties on the woman's breasts. Some dealers have hidden Newsweek behind other magazines and at a Fast Fare convenience store in Raleigh, N.C., it is available on request -- from the 'adults only' rack. 'It's a painting and it doesn't bother me personally, but a lot of people might find it offensive,' said store manager Charlie Smith. 'There was general astonishment that Newsweek would put something like that on the cover,' said Marvin Rose, newsstand operator in New York's Daily News Building. 'I had to reassure quite a few people that it was Newsweek ... Some of them said, 'This is art? What's happening to Newsweek?'' Avery Hunt, director of public affairs for Newsweek, said 3 million copies were distributed and newsstand sales were twice as big as normal in New York City. Hunt said the magazine has received 'about a dozen phone calls' protesting the cover and that 'one or two of the callers...
