This cup is the work of English silversmith William Ker Reid, originally a partner of the Newcastle firm Reid & Sons, but who had formed his own firm based in London from 1812. The cup dates from 1833, but there is an inscription on the reverse cartouche which dates from 1871. It was inscribed as a trophy for the winner of a horse race: the inscription reads 'Brown Bess...

The surface of the body is plain and embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a crescent. This solid silver tureen is encircled with a fine and impressive gadroon style border to the rim. This antique tureen retains the original impressive hallmarked push fit domed cover surmounted by the exceptional, original hallmarked leaf decorated ring style handle; this handle secures to the interior of the cover with a nut and peg allowing it to sit securely. The cover is further ornamented with the identical border and aforementioned crest to the body. This George IV tureen is fitted with two exceptional shaped gadroon and leaf decorated scrolling handles.
