William Scott Art

British, 1913-1989
William Scott was a British artist, best known for his still life and abstract painting. William Scott was born in Greenock, Scotland to Irish and Scottish parents, moving to Ulster when Scott was 11 years old where he spent the remainder of his early life. Scott studied first at Belfast College of Art (1928-1931) and later at the Royal Academy (1931-1935), where he shared accommodation with the poet Dylan Thomas. After completing his studies, Scott lived in France for several years, mainly in Port Avon and St Tropez, developing a life-long kinship with French still life painting. Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin was particularly interesting to the artist during this period, later he would become more influenced by Georges Braque. Alongside French still life painting, Scott drew inspiration from pre-historic art and the untrained art of children. The artist spent his adult life living in both London and Somerset, he was also a frequent visitor to the Cornwall where he connected with artists of the St Ives school and was particularly fond of the fishing village of Mousehole, which is depicted in his work. In 1953, Scott traveled to New York, becoming one of the first British artists to meet the Abstract Expressionists, including Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Mark Rothko would later visit the the Scotts in Somerset. The recipient of numerous awards throughout his career, including the Painters Prize at the John Moore’s Liverpool Exhibition (1959), Scott also represented Britain at the 1958 Venice Biennale. Scott produced some landscapes and nudes but painted still life work for his entire career, he experimented with abstraction during the 1950s but these were always based within the tradition of still life. His work often bridged the gap between representation and abstraction, with motifs of objects such as cups, saucepans and frying baskets, still recognisable even in his later, more austere work, along with the flat planes of colour that often characterise his work. The artist compared his repeated depictions of kitchen objects to that of Braque’s frequent studies of guitars, 'if the guitar was to Braque his Madonna the frying pan could be my guitar’. While the subject matter remained much the same throughout Scott’s career, elements such as scale developed with his compositions becoming larger and the surface of the painting more laboured and worked. Public collections representing Scott’s work include Tate Gallery which held retrospectives of his work in 1972 and 2013, Fitzwilliam Museum, Jerwood Foundation and the Guggenheim Museum, New York. His work was formally part of the private art collection of David Bowie. Scott’s early life was made into a film, ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’by his artist and director son, James Scott.

The Bird Cage, No.14, 1947 - Lithograph by William Scott with Mother and Child
By William Scott
Located in Kingsclere, GB
The Bird Cage, No.14, 1947 lithograph 30 x 40 in 76.2 x 101.6 cm signed in the plate From a 1947 gouache and chalk original (53.3 x 48.2 cm), the motif also worked into 'Boy and Birdcage', 1947-48, an oil painting. Scott was teaching at Corsham Court with Clifford and Rosemary Ellis, who had been chosen. The birdcage was originally explored in his 1946 painting 'Robert with Birdcage'. Produced for the first series of Lyons prints, by sixteen artists, it was the most avant-garde image chosen for the standardised sizes 'This was distinguishable as from the other lithographs because it was rendered in a bold artistic style of simple shapes and blocks of flat colour.' 'Tea and a Slice of Art', Charlie Batchelor, Towner Art Gallery, 2007. The lithographs were bought early on by institutions including the V&A, National Galleries of Scotland and British Council, as well as being available in New York with Rudolf...

She Disappeared into Complete Silence (AD14558) - large abstract photograph
By Mona Kuhn
Located in San Francisco, CA
In the series 'She Disappeared into Complete Silence' (2014) Mona Kuhn takes a new direction into abstraction. She turns to a highly austere and restrained reductionist geometry and distilled formal purity, connecting the interior to the exterior, the visible to the hidden. These reflections cause one to linger, as they merge to create a dynamic equilibrium of tension, spaces and rythms. AD14558 (She Disappeared into Complete Silence) 60" x 45" / 152cm x 114cm edition of 8 + 2AP 40" x 30" / 102cm x 76cm edition of 8 + 2AP limited edition photograph is printed under artist supervision and accompanied by signed artist certificate: artist signature labels are 8x10 in size signed, editioned, dated and titled by the artist, and stamped for authenticity label __________________ About the artist Acclaimed for her contemporary depictions, Kuhn is considered a leading artist in the world of figurative discourse. Throughout a career spanning more than twenty years, the underlying theme of her work is her reflection on humanity’s longing for spiritual connection and solidarity. As she solidified her photographic style, Kuhn created a notable approach to the nude by developing friendships with her subjects, and employing a range of playful visual strategies that use natural light and minimalist settings to evoke a sublime sense of comfort between the human figure and its environment. Her work is natural, restful, and a reinterpretation of the nude in the canon of contemporary art. For the past two decades, the Los-Angeles based artist's works have been shown steadily, revealing an astonishing consistency in technique, of subject and of purpose. In 2001, Kuhn’s photographs were first seen by an influential audience during the exhibition at Charles Cowles Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Kuhn’s distinct aesthetic has propelled her as one of the most collectible contemporary art photographers—her work is in private and public collections worldwide and she is represented by galleries across the United States, Europe and Asia. Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, of German descent. In 1989, Kuhn moved to the US and earned her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. Occasionally, Mona teaches at UCLA and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Mona Kuhn’s first monograph, Photographs, was debuted by Steidl in 2004; followed by Evidence (2007), Native (2010), Bordeaux Series (2011), Private (2014), and She Disappeared into Complete Silence (2018/19). In addition, Kuhn's monograph titled Bushes and Succulents has been published by Stanley/Barker Editions, with a debut at Jeu de Paume in Paris, In 2021, Thames & Hudson published a career retrospective titled Works. Kuhn's most recent publication Kings Road with Steidl accompanies a multi-dimensional museum traveling exhibition shown in Europe and the US. Mona Kuhn’s work is in private and public collections worldwide, including The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Hammer Museum, Perez Art Museum Miami, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Kiyosato Museum in Japan. Kuhn's work has been exhibited at The Louvre Museum and Le Bal in Paris; The Whitechapel Gallery and Royal Academy of Arts in London; Musée de l’Elysée in Switzerland; Leopold Museum in Vienna Austria, The Polygon Gallery in Vancouver Canada, Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan and Australian Centre for Photography. Blue & Grey Green Plan: Abstract Geometric Framed Painting in Cool Toned Palette
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract geometric painting with a cool toned palette of green, blue, and grey with accents of black and white against a sea foam green colored acrylic wash background "Blue and Grey Green Plan" made by Hudson Valley artists, Donise English, in 2022 Graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic painting on vellum 24 x 18 inches unframed, 31 x 25 x 1.5 with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and simple black moulding Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract geometric painting on vellum was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a blue green toned background of acrylic wash. A grid of box-like patterns in sky blue, green, grey, and black with white line work are stacked to create an irregular shape or an "imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on vellum is complemented by a simple black frame with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and wire backing. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang. About the artist: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. A central checkerboard formation floats over a ground of pastel color or washes of grey or cream. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. The artist recently retired from her decades career teaching at Marist College and is now devoted full time to her art making. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. 20th century Belgium, Black and White Abstract pencil drawing, Etude
By Marcel Dumont
Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding pencil on paper Abstract drawing. Marcel Dumont was a Liège artist who painted in oils and gouache, also produced collages and was an illustrator and engraver, doing so in a number of different styles. Early on in his career, he tended to produce paintings displaying a poetic realism but this changed over time until, in 1957, he was employing geometric abstraction and later still, the influence of pop art could be discerned. His geometric style has strong linear structure which occasionally veers to expressionism and the effect of this is an interesting sense of detachment that the viewer of the work can feel and one engages with the subject on a different level than one would normally expect. A critic wrote of him," Sometimes expressionist, sometimes linear, the abstraction forms itself willingly, in Marcel Dumont's world, to leave the rectangular structure to connect to carefully prepared tones. He retains also, in his abundant output, a few poetic pop-art collages together with a number of drawings and engravings illustrating Stefan Zweig...
