Rare Silver Pocket Sundial and Compass by Michael Butterfield, Paris, circa 1700
By Butterfield Paris
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
A beautiful, rare solid silver Anglo-French octagonal pocket sundial with compass by Michael Butterfield, circa 1700.
The sundial is made for a latitude of 44° and could be used in places in the south of France such as Avignon and elsewhere along this parallel. The elaborately engraved base plate has a Roman chapter ring on which the gnomon (a triangular flap) casts its shadow. It is signed by the maker in the following manner: Butterfield A Paris. On one side is a glazed recessed compass with a blued steel hand to position the instrument in such a way that the time can be read. The hinged triangular gnomon is richly engraved and in the shape of a bird’s head. The folding gnomon and cut corners enable the dial to be carried in the pocket.
The underside shows the latitudes of various Southern-French places in the relevant areas
Its maker Michael Butterfield was an English instrument maker who based himself in 'Le Quay de l'Horloge' of Paris from circa 1685. These types of dials, often replicated by other makers, became known as Butterfield Dials...

Questions About Zenith Clocks
- What is Rolex Zenith?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022The second generation of the Rolex Zenith started with a similar style to the original model featuring three subdials and an outer ring contrasted against it. The luxurious Rolex Zenith features sapphire crystals and crown guards for protection against scratches. Shop a collection of authentic Rolex Zenith watches from top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022The simplest way to identify a Zenith Daytona is the placement of the sub-dials in the watch face. In Daytona watches that feature a Zenith movement inside, a 30-minute dial is set at the 3 o’clock mark, while a 12-hour dial is set at the 6 o’clock mark and a running seconds dial is set at the 9 o’clock mark. On 1stDibs, find a range of Zenith Daytona watches.
- Who wears Zenith watches?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024A number of celebrities wear Zenith watches. They include Chinese actor and singer Xiao Zhan, NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, street artist Felipe Pantone, DJ Carl Cox, actor Will Ferrell, professional tennis player Patrick Mouratoglou and actor Nicolas Cage. Japanese gymnast and television personality Airi Hatakeyama also frequently wears timepieces from the luxury watchmaker's women's collection. Explore a range of Zenith watches on 1stDibs.
- What happened to Zenith watches?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024What happened to Zenith watches was that the ownership of the watchmaker changed hands. During the quartz crisis of the 1970s and ’80s, Zenith suffered financial setbacks and struggled to recover during the ’90s. However, Louis Vuitton-Moët Hennesy (LVMH), the luxury goods company that also owns TAG Heuer and Hublot, purchased Zenith in 1999 and revived the brand. On 1stDibs, shop a range of Zenith watches.
- Are Zenith watches Swiss-made?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024Yes, Zenith watches are Swiss-made. The luxury watchmaker has its atelier in Le Locle, which is in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Founded in 1865, the workshop has the distinction of being the first modern watch manufacturer. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Zenith watches.
- Is a Zenith watch worth buying?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertOctober 30, 2024Many watch lovers believe that Zenith watches are worth buying. Since 1865, the Swiss manufacturer has become known for producing reliable timepieces, and the company has won more than 2,300 watch design prizes throughout its more than 150-year history. Some of the maker's timepieces that are popular among collectors include the Pilot Cronometro Tipo CP-2, the Elite Captain Central Second Silver Sunray Dial, the Chronomaster El Primero and the Zenith Defy Zero G. However, whether or not it’s worth investing in Zenith watches is totally subjective! At 1stDibs, we believe in buying what you love. Our shopping experience enables discovery and learning, whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or just beginning your collection. Find Zenith watches and other watches on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 22, 2024No, Zenith isn't better than Omega. These two luxury watch brands are both universally heralded. Over the last few years, Zenith has seen a resurgence in popularity, and its Zenith El Primero movement is of fine enough quality to now be used in some Rolex chronograph watches. It’s a celebrated part of Omega lore that the brand’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph was the first watch to make a lunar landing. The house’s origins date much further back to 1848, when Swiss watchmaker Louis Brandt first set up shop. When shopping for a watch, you should think about what you’re looking for in this type of accessory. You may wish to consider the power reserve, the materials, its accuracy, the craftsmanship, where it was manufactured and more. Find a collection of watches for sale on 1stDibs.
