Nautical nautical log counter made of brass in the shape of a harpoon signed MASSEY'S early 1800s
Log o solcometro contamiglia nautico in ottone a forma di spear, signed MASSEY'S Anchor Ship Log No. 1 E.M.P. This is the first model to go into production around the first half of the 19th century. The solcometer is an ancient, very rare and characteristically shaped nautical instrument that measured the distance and speed of a ship. He was thrown overboard and dragged behind the ship itself; the rotary motion of the propeller, transmitted the number of revolutions made on itself to the three dials made on an enameled metal plate placed in the center of the log; the dials reported measurements in miles from 0 to 100 in tens, from 0 to 10 in units, and from 0 to 1 in quarters. I dati venivano poi letti ogni ora per ricavare anche la velocità.
Good condition perfectly working and mounted on custom-made wood and brass base.
Measures 54x 13.5 x 14 cm - 21.2 x 5.3 x 5.5 in.
