A wonderful historical painting by Laslett John Pott of Charles I playing chess before the battle of Naseby. The King is depicted sat at a table in front of a chess board opposite a member of his household. With the white king in check the game appears to be over, but Charles is yet to admit defeat. To the left an older boy, a page or possibly one of his sons, is shown bending down to pick up a glove. Meanwhile a lurcher can be seen on the rug beneath the table, its attention drawn towards other courtiers waiting behind a screen to the left. On the far right of the painting, two men stand next to a large window watching smoke rising from a distant fire. This painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1881, no. 515, under the title ‘Before Naseby’. It was believed to have been inspired by an anecdote of the checkmate of the white king at a game of chess foreshadowing Charles I defeat at the battle of Nasesby. Charles I, who was often referred to as the ‘White King’, was a keen chess player and was known to have played during stressful times in the Civil War. Laslett John Pott was a genre and historical painter born in Newark, Nottinghamshire in 1837, the son of John Manger Pott, and his wife Sophia Charlotte Moss. His father was a successful auctioneer and land valuer and his wealth enabled Pott to receive a good education. Although he showed an early talent for art, his father wanted him to become an architect and at the age of 16 he became an apprentice at a local firm. Grapes, plums and a peach are shown grouped on a floral patterned green cloth at the front of a marble topped table. Behind the fruit is a large glass display dome with an arrangement of exotic taxidermy birds. The reflection in the glass gives the viewer a glimpse of a tall window with a house beyond, adding another dimension to the painting. Ellen Ladell was born Ellen Maria Levett in Ipswich in 1853 to George and Maria Levett. Her father was a foundry smith and the family lived at 30 Borough Road in Ipswich. She initially worked as a Milliner around 1871 but sought artistic training during her spare time. It is at this point she met and became a pupil of the still life painter Edward Ladell (1821-1886), who at that time was a widower. Ellen married Edward in Great Yarmouth on 21 October, 1878. The couple initially moved to Torquay where they had their son Kenwyn in 1880, but then decided to settle in Exeter, living at 99 Sidwell Street and setting up a studio at 20 Queen Street. Edward’s influence can been seen in her work as their styles and subject matter share some similarities. However, a number of Ellen’s paintings also included taxidermy under glass...

Ernest Crofts British, (1847-1911) On Guard Oil on panel, signed & dated (18)79 Image size: 9.25 inches x 6.75 inches Size including frame: 19.5 inches x 17 inches A wonderful historical painting of a roundhead soldier standing outside a fortress by Ernest Crofts. The soldier is depicted wearing a back and breast plate over a red and yellow sleeved jacket tied with a sash around his waist. On his head, he wears a felt hat with red and white feathers and holds a sword in his hand. He is shown standing at the moated entrance of a fortified stone building with a portcullis. Beyond the raised portcullis, a group of soldiers can be seen in the shadows. The soldier’s uniform is typical of Cromwell’s famous ‘Ironside’ cavalry and indicates he is an officer, who, in Cromwell’s time would have earned his place based on merit rather than social status.
