We represent artists working in a variety of media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, printmaking, jewelry, and mixed media. Elise Zoller has recently embarked on a series of plein air paintings of sites around Salt Lake City and in the smaller towns of Utah from Hurricane to Huntsville. She has enjoyed meeting people along the road and learning about the history of the state. “Plein air work can be physically demanding, but there is no substitute for working from life. Light and shadow dance in subtle ways a photograph cannot capture. Even the wind and the fragrances it carries inform the work. Scenes come alive when you stand in one place for a few hours. "For me, paint documents the state of things, how I feel and what is at the forefront in my thinking—maybe it’s like the soup of the day. I do not consider this process to be anything special in itself. The paintings record the daily random and absurd associations I make, which seem interesting to me after the fact. The Domestic paintings are a case in point. My wife and I have six children. Four have left home. Three are married. We are left with two children, both currently in middle school. We have about five years and they too will move out. This is on my mind. I am thinking about the layers of memories and it comes out as layers of paint. Our inherited aesthetic defines beauty in landscape as green and arable land or grand, breathtaking places. I feel the need to expand that definition. I want to portray the desert as it is right now; to dispense with the limitations of what has come before, to quietly point out the beauty of places that are harsh and forbidding to habitation but express an aesthetic of the wild. More About Phillips Gallery

Phillips Gallery opened its doors to the Utah public in 1965. Bonnie and Denis Phillips (pictured) set up shop in a former dry-cleaning building, confident that they could create an establishment which would both promote and advance Utah art. It was the first venture of its kind, by and for a group of forward-thinking artists.

Now, 56 years later, Phillips Gallery houses the largest stable of artists in the state. Our three floors of exhibit space feature rotating exhibits of painting, sculptures, photography, original jewelry, and ceramics. At its core, Phillips Gallery remains committed to its original goal: to represent a diverse selection of some of the finest regional artists in a comfortable, service-oriented atmosphere.

Our main floor is dedicated to exhibiting new work by 1 - 3 artists, rotating every month. (pictured: Main Gallery exhibit by Heather Barron and Nancy Vorm)

Our extensive upstairs gallery (where Bonnie and Denis Phillips used to live) displays rotating work by all of our artists, in a uniquely casual setting.
