"Male Athlete with Kettlebell", Rare Bronze Sculpture with Male Nude by Seifert
By Franz Seifert
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This highly rare bronze of a nude male athlete preparing to left a heavy kettlebell weight was sculpted by an Austrian artist, Franz Seifert, in 1922. Although Seifert is known for his nude figures straining to accomplish physical tasks -- such as carrying a large bucket or splitting a stone -- this sculpture is the only example known to exist. A decade after this sculpture was cast, Seifert carved a marble portrait of Siegfried Marcus, inventor of the gasoline-powered car, for a monument in Vienna, which includes a nude male figure in bas relief racing forward on the upper edge of an automobile wheel. He also created a large sculpture grouping honoring Empress Elizabeth...

"Sur le Pont D'Avignon", Charming Art Deco Box Celebrating Traditional Song
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Although it has endured many scuffs and indignities, this extremely rare Art Deco box still charms, the figures on its lid playing the violin and dancing to the old children's tune of "Sur le Pont D'Avignon." The ancient bridge in Avignon, Provence has been the subject of song since the 16th century, but the song that is beloved today was first published in the mid-19th century. Here, the artist depicts a central fiddler flanked by two couples with elongated limbs, wide-brimmed hats and elegant dress. The sides of the box depict the wide arches of the bridge, with fish swimming in the water below. The exterior is covered with a paper printed in color lithography, and the interior is painted candy apple red. The scene is signed "Tolmer," perhaps Roger Tolmer...

"Salome with Head of John the Baptist", Unique Art Deco Charger, Ericson
By Estrid Ericson
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Elegant and beautifully crafted, this superb example of Swedish Grace artisanry was made by the famed Svenskt Tenn workshop in Sweden, which produced a wide range of artisan-designed and made sculptures and home goods, often in pewter, as here. Svenskt Tenn was founded in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, who brought together an astounding array of artists such as Josef Frank and Anna Petrus, many now world-renowned, to create a wide range of objects. Ericson herself was known for creating works in pewter with patterns or designs incised in the metal, so this piece is attributed to her artistry. Here she depicts Salome, holding the head of John the Baptist...

"Triton, Merman and Mermaid, " Sculptural Vase w/ Aquatic Motif and Nudes in Blue
By Edgardo Simone
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A masterful -- and brilliantly-hued -- example of high style Art Deco sculpture, this large and unique vase depicts several nude figures along its upper edge -- a Triton blowing his shell-horn on one side and a nude merman and mermaid embracing on the other. The sides of the vase are enlivened by a series of jumping dolphins, and the entire surface is glazed in streaky blues, pale greens and rich browns. The artist was Edgardo Simone, an eccentric and brilliant sculptor who worked in bronze, plaster and ceramics over several decades. He was born in Italy and trained in Rome, but spent much of his career in America, specializing in portrait busts. He sculpted the likenesses of Thomas Edison, John Pershing, Henry Ford, Louis Brandeis, Sally Rand, President Franklin Roosevelt...

This remarkable pair of "faun" and "nymph" sculptures memorializes the legendary performance of Vaslav Nijinsky as the Faun in Ballets Russes' renowned production of "Afternoon of a Faun" in 1912. Sculpted by Fred Press several decades later -- in the 1930s or 1940s -- the Faun captures the bold and sensual costume and headpiece of Nijinsky's character as designed by Léon Bakst, complete with spotted, form-fitting tights, a bare torso and a headpiece with horns in gold. Located in Philadelphia, PA
A brilliant piece of sculpture capturing one of the most dramatic moments in American baseball, this 1953 bronze by Joe Brown shows a baseball player touching second base with his right foot and readying to throw the ball to first base for the second out with his right arm. The figure is cantilvered over the wood base, and the placement of his arms and legs is dancelike in its grace and strength. "Secessionist Covered Urn" by Fraureuth Porcelain Works in Cobalt, Gold & Black
By Emanuel Josef Margold
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Brilliantly glazed in tones of cobalt, gold, black and white, and decorated with an elaborate geometric pattern overlaid with undulating, organic Art Nouveau motifs, this domed porcelain urn was made by the Fraureuth works in Germany, and reportedly designed by Austrian architect Emanuel Josef Margold. Fraureuth was founded in 1866, and for almost a century produced some of Germany's finest porcelains, including some in the modern, bold style espoused by the German and Vienna Secessionist movements. Margold was born in Austria, studied in Königsberg and Mainz, and later became an assistant to Josef Hoffmann and an employee of the Wiener Werkstätte. In 1907, publisher Alexander Koch in Darmstadt became aware of Margold and published his designs in various magazines. Within a few years, Margold moved to Darmstadt to join the art colony there, and became a prolific designer of jewelry...
