"Hercules and the Hind, " Large Art Deco Bowl by Longwy, Deep Pink, Ruddy Brown

About the Item

Large and extremely rare, this substantial Art Deco bowl depicts the young Hercules performing one of his twelve labors: capturing the Hind of Ceryneia and bringing it alive to Eurystheus. The Hind (a red-haired deer) was sacred to the goddess Diana, so Hercules' journey back to Eurystheus was complicated when he encountered Diana along the way. Vividly glazed in tones of ruddy brown, deep pink and chocolate, this piece was designed by Rolande Rizzi for the famed Longwy ceramic works, and the bowl's bottom is extremely well-marked. This bowl can be displayed on a flat surface, but it is also equipped with original hardware for hanging on a wall.
