"Dancing Figure in Asian Costume, " Monumental Mid Century Enamel Bowl

About the Item

The most spectacular piece of mid century enamelwork we have ever seen, or offered, this monumental shallow bowl, designed for hanging on a wall, depicts a dancing female figure -- clearly influenced by traditional costumes and folk traditions in Thailand, Burma and Southeast Asia -- in an elaborate headdress and robe, all expressed in technicolor hues. The figure and her sparkling, glowing setting are punctuated with strings of enamel "jewels" -- cabochon-like concentrations of enamel -- that give the piece an intensity and richness that is quite remarkable. Although not signed, this piece surpasses the best enamelwork of Sascha Brastoff, who helped to popularize exotic scenes like this in the 1940s and 50s. This piece is enamel on copper.
