"Merman and Dolphin", Large, Grotto-esque Art Nouveau Floor Vase, Goldscheider

About the Item

Large, substantial, extraordinary -- and probably unique -- this Art Nouveau floor vase depicts a nude merman pulling at the whiskers of a playful dolphin, surrounded by the bounty of the sea and surmounted by an oceanic steam vent dripping with seaweed. Like much of the work of Goldscheider and Amphora at the time, this piece is laden with exotic and fantastic detail, including seashells and a crab, and the glazes have subtlety and depth that inspires awe. While it's true that ceramic makers in Bohemia and Austria were fascinated by exotic and fantastic themes at the turn of the 20th century, this piece also reflects the long interest among the nobility and the church in creating grottoes with sea creatures and dripping seaweed. Given the matte glazes and aquatic motif, the piece is probably by Goldscheider, but it is not marked.

  • "Triton, Merman and Mermaid, " Sculptural Vase w/ Aquatic Motif and Nudes in Blue
    By Edgardo Simone
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
A masterful -- and brilliantly-hued -- example of high style Art Deco sculpture, this large and unique vase depicts several nude figures along its upper edge -- a Triton blowing his shell-horn on one side and a nude merman and mermaid embracing on the other. The sides of the vase are enlivened by a series of jumping dolphins, and the entire surface is glazed in streaky blues, pale greens and rich browns. The artist was Edgardo Simone, an eccentric and brilliant sculptor who worked in bronze, plaster and ceramics over several decades. He was born in Italy and trained in Rome, but spent much of his career in America, specializing in portrait busts. He sculpted the likenesses of Thomas Edison, John Pershing, Henry Ford, Louis Brandeis, Sally Rand, President Franklin Roosevelt...
