"Two Nude Divers", Rare, Large Engraved Glass Art Deco Vase w/ Male Figures

About the Item

One of the most quintessential and coveted examples of high-style Art Deco artisanry produced anywhere in the 1930s -- and the largest and most ambitious example of Vicke Lindstrand's "Diver" series for Orrefors we have ever offered -- this 13-inch engraved glass vase depicts two nude male divers, one from the back reaching upward, and one from the front plunging downward. Lindstrand's figures are always lean and elongated -- almost Mannerist -- and he loved to depict the musculature of each figure as they adopted dancelike poses underwater. This piece is a very fine example of the extraordinary engraved glass perfected by Orrefors in the 1930s, designed by Lindstand -- the company's leading designer -- just before he moved to the Uppsala-Ekeby firm in 1940. The vase is well marked on the bottom.
