"Shark Diver, " Superb, Unique Art Deco Engraved Glass Vase with Nude Male Diver

About the Item

Clearly inspired by the renowned series of engraved glass pieces by Vicke Lindstrand for Orrefors in the 1930s -- which depicted one, two or three nude male divers, some of them shown hunting for sharks -- this high stye Art Deco bowl features a nude male figure diving downward, with knife in hand, and a shark on the opposite side, its mouth agape. This is not signed by Orrefors, but the quality is equal to Lindstrand's best pieces, so our educated guess is that one of Sweden's leading glass engravers -- from Orrefors, Elme, Kosta Boda or Ekenas -- was moonlighting in this case, engraving the scene on an elegant glass bowl surmounted on a glass sphere. It is also possible that an engraver from Steuben created this piece, since the company issued pieces using the spherical motif, and also made very fine engraved pieces designed by Sidney Waugh and others in the 1930s. In any case, this piece is remarkable and unique.
