"Fish and Seaweed", Unique Art Deco Vase by Fevola for Lachenal, 1920s

About the Item

This lovely and atmospheric Art Deco vase designed and glazed by Félix-Pascal Févola for Jean-Jacques Lachenal depicts a group of fish around all sides, weaving and bobbing among twisting lengths of seaweed. The glazes are in shades of pale brown and blue on a ground the color of sand. Lachenal's father and brother were responsible for several generations of remarkable ceramic pieces in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, and Jean-Jacques in particular drew inspiration from ancient Persian ceramics. He also worked with contemporary artists, such as Févola, to make very modern works such as this piece. Févola is best known for a series of pieces now on the grounds of the Hearst Castle in California, as well as several monuments and memorials in France. The artist also had a hand in the design of the Palais de Tokyo, one of the world's great ensembles of Art Deco sculpture. The piece is well-marked on the bottom.
