"Under the Sea, " Atmospheric Art Deco Vase with Fish and Seaweed, 1944
About the Item
A marvelous, atmospheric example of Art Deco artisanry, this cylindrical vase by Jens Jensen for Rookwood Pottery depicts a fish swimming amidst moving water and tendrils of seaweed, all lit by the shifting light and shadows cast by the sun above. The colors -- translucent green, slate blue, pale ivories and tans -- are suggestive of a life underwater. The artist -- his full name was Jens Jacob Herring Krug Jensen -- immigrated from Denmark in 1927, and shortly after joined the Rookwood pottery -- the largest and most successful art pottery in America. He became known for his more abstract approach to his subjects, creating dreamy, semi-distinct worlds that suggested Art Deco as well as Post-Impressionist design.
