Antique Mirrored Wrought Iron and Tole Overdoor with Cartouche, France, C. 1850
Located in Dallas, TX
Originally a mirrored architectural for above a doorway, this wrought iron and tole overdoor with cartouche dates to circa 1850 France. The elaborate decorative element would have been positioned as a transom, directly over the top of a door.
In the center of the overdoor is a monogrammed arabesque with two mirror images of the letter “F” affixed near the top of the interlaced tole scrollwork. The tole is set within an open wrought iron cartouche consisting of curled leaves that surmount rinceaux of volutes, barbs, and additional curled leaves, encompassed by a thin demilune border. Gilt roundels add additional elegance, as do the centers of the volutes, which have also been gilded.
