The two twin architectural elements of sculpted Botticino marble have a quadrangular base from which a chalice-shaped foot extends. Resting on this, a round pod-like element swells up to support a large pine cone. This is the main decoration: however, the other ornamental details enhance and embellish it, while exalting its position above, whether observed from afar or up close.

Dean Kugler is a seasoned interdisciplinary artist, painter, and figurative sculptor. His 3D work is featured primarily at Gallery Victor Armendariz in Chicago. In the last three years, Dean has also been featured at Abend Gallery in Denver, The Figge Art Museum, and Bereskin Gallery in Iowa. He has shown at SOFA Chicago in 2017, 2018, and 2019 and participated in ArtPrize in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
He sees himself primarily as a sculptor due to the challenges he finds and thrives on within the process. In all its beauty, crudeness, and subtleties, the figure offers infinite opportunities to express feelings and emotions. There is also a physicality to sculpture that requires the work to be experienced through movement in order to reveal more about the piece.
Dean has always been drawn to the interactive nature of large-scale sculpture that is available to the public - he loves the idea that his work entices the observer to go beyond what they can see and add tactility to the experience. By using both realism and abstraction, he creates a visual that challenges the viewer to resolve what they are seeing. Therefore, providing a greater connection between the artist and the viewer.

A unique architectural from Italy, hand carved in oak circa 1850, this interior door has been painted a grayish-blue color and adorned with golden geometric and foliate motifs on two rectangular panels with recessed molding. The top panel is aligned in a vertical fashion, with a lion mascaron at the top that is surrounded by curled leaves. Beneath the lion’s face is a beautiful Roman-style foliate arabesque flanked by a pair of roundels with vine-like tendrils.
The second panel beneath is much smaller and has a horizontal orientation. In the center is a vase-form embellishment, encircled by sinuous foliage. Most of the hardware has been removed, with the exception of two gudgeons (collars) from pintle hinges on the side. Our Italian interior door...

Antique French Painted and Giltwood Overdoor, circa 1850

The reign of Napoleon III, often referred to as “The Second Empire”, featured an amalgamation of styles from previous regimes, ranging from the light and airy Rococo of Louis XV to the more stoic Neoclassical trophies of Louis XVI. Our painted giltwood overdoor from circa 1850 is in the vein of a Regence or Louis XV adaptation of the Napoleon III period. The piece is adorned with flowing motifs inspired by nature, such as the curled leaves, scalloped shell, and deep carvings seen on the overdoor.
A main principle of Napoleon III furnishings was to utilize every inch available, as noted by the gadrooned leaf and rinceaux that emanate from behind the center medallion, forming a sprawling border. The medallion features an amazing high relief carving of a floral bouquet surrounded by curled leaves with scrolled tendrils and raised, asymmetrical panels. At the top is a scalloped shell, which is mimicked by a pair of parted leaves set at an angle in each of the upper corners. All of the carvings are presented in giltwood, which pairs nicely with the cream colored background that is enveloped in a quarter round molding (also gilded). The entire grouping is presented as a raised carving, with a thin board behind it that has tas de sable (sandpit) pilasters topped with block finials flanking the overdoor. This antique cast iron fireback features the coat of arms of Michel Larcher III, Marquis d’Olisy, seigneur de Bajacourt, baron de Baye. Larcher III was appointed as intendant (steward) of Chalons from 1692-1699 by Louis XIV, King of France. Chalons was a city in the Champagne province, in the northeast of France.
