A unique architectural from Italy, hand carved in oak circa 1850, this interior door has been painted a grayish-blue color and adorned with golden geometric and foliate motifs on two rectangular panels with recessed molding. The top panel is aligned in a vertical fashion, with a lion mascaron at the top that is surrounded by curled leaves. Beneath the lion’s face is a beautiful Roman-style foliate arabesque flanked by a pair of roundels with vine-like tendrils. The second panel beneath is much smaller and has a horizontal orientation. In the center is a vase-form embellishment, encircled by sinuous foliage. Most of the hardware has been removed, with the exception of two gudgeons (collars) from pintle hinges on the side. The reign of Napoleon III, often referred to as “The Second Empire”, featured an amalgamation of styles from previous regimes, ranging from the light and airy Rococo of Louis XV to the more stoic Neoclassical trophies of Louis XVI. Our painted giltwood overdoor from circa 1850 is in the vein of a Regence or Louis XV adaptation of the Napoleon III period. The piece is adorned with flowing motifs inspired by nature, such as the curled leaves, scalloped shell, and deep carvings seen on the overdoor. A main principle of Napoleon III furnishings was to utilize every inch available, as noted by the gadrooned leaf and rinceaux that emanate from behind the center medallion, forming a sprawling border. The medallion features an amazing high relief carving of a floral bouquet surrounded by curled leaves with scrolled tendrils and raised, asymmetrical panels. At the top is a scalloped shell, which is mimicked by a pair of parted leaves set at an angle in each of the upper corners. All of the carvings are presented in giltwood, which pairs nicely with the cream colored background that is enveloped in a quarter round molding (also gilded). The entire grouping is presented as a raised carving, with a thin board behind it that has tas de sable (sandpit) pilasters topped with block finials flanking the overdoor. All three doors have retained the gudgeons of pintle hinges on the sides, while two of the doors still have a lock/latch system. Our set of three Italian interior doors could be installed with traditional hinges, but they could also be installed with a modern track system, allowing the doors to slide independently of each other. This antique cast iron fireback features the coat of arms of Michel Larcher III, Marquis d’Olisy, seigneur de Bajacourt, baron de Baye. Larcher III was appointed as intendant (steward) of Chalons from 1692-1699 by Louis XIV, King of France. Chalons was a city in the Champagne province, in the northeast of France. The fireback was produced in nearby Lorraine, circa 1850. The rectangular fireback has an arched top and thick molding along all edges except the bottom.
