A Wedgwood Fairyland lustre bowl designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones ca. 1925 and decorated with the 'Blue Willow' pattern. Thomas Minton is credited with creating the standard pattern as we know it today circa 1780; from there, all the major English potteries, and some American ones, began producing ‘Blue Willow’ transferwares...

Art Deco Yellow Lustre Ceramic Bowl by Crown Ducal, Staffordshire, England 1920s

By Crown Ducal England

Located in Glasgow, GB

A striking English Art Deco ceramic bowl produced by Crown Ducal, Staffordshire, circa the 1920s. The shallow, wide form is finished in a vibrant yellow lustre glaze with soft iridescence, capturing the era’s fascination with surface, colour, and light. Both decorative and functional in intent, the bowl exemplifies Crown Ducal’s interwar production of visually expressive tableware. The smooth, rounded body is edged with a fine hand-painted black rim, framing a stylised illustrated scene at the centre. A swallow in flight is depicted alongside butterflies and a dragonfly, lending the composition a narrative, nature-inspired quality. The painterly motif reflects the modern decorative language developed within English Art Deco ceramics of the period, balancing clarity of form with ornamental detail. Originally conceived as a modern fruit or serving bowl, the piece now functions equally well as a decorative centrepiece for a dining or coffee table, where its colour and illustration can be fully appreciated. Dimensions: Diameter: 10.0 in (25.5 cm) Height: 2.4 in (6 cm) Condition: Good antique condition. Fine age-related hairline cracks are visible at the centre on both face and underside, consistent with early 20th-century ceramics of this type. The glaze and decoration remain intact and present well. An evocative example of English Art Deco lustreware, and a compelling addition for collectors of Crown Ducal pottery...
